Intel Rocket Lake Quicksync Transcoding for 4K HDR Broken for Plex on Unraid

Server Version#: 1.24.1.4931
Player Version#: Issue occurs on all players.

Background:
It is currently a known issue that Plex is unable to correctly implement hardware transcoding on Intel Tiger Lake CPUs (see this thread). Rocket lake also experiences similar issues and I have been informed that because Tiger Lake and Rocket Lake are separate generations a different support thread should be created to track this issue.

The issue:
Transcoding any 4K HDR content introduces serious artifacts which makes playback impossible to watch. I am running an i5-11400 on Unraid 6.9.2 and using the Linuxserver.io docker which is currently PMS version 1.24.1.4931. Screenshots below:

I am happy to do what I can to help test/troubleshoot this issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Server Version: 1.24.2.4973
Kernel Version: 5.14.1
OS: Ubuntu 21.04

Experiencing a similar problem. I’m currently on linux kernel 5.14.1 and no hardware transcoding works (x264 or x265). From what I can recall - transcoding worked with the exception of HEVC when I was on kernel 5.11.0-31.33, but since I really only need transcoding for x265 content I moved off that kernel.

Is there any hope that this will be fixed in the near future update? This annoyance has caused me to try Jellyfin, which does HDR 4K transcoding perfectly with Rocket Lake. I don’t know really want to switch as I’ve been a long time plex pass user, but it’d be nice to know there is some hope in this being resolved soon.

Using unRAID w/ i5 11400 on Linuxserver docker. With tone mapping off the artifacts are not so bad, random corner artifact flashes, but with tone mapping on, it is pretty much unwatchable.

My hope is that when the Tiger Lake issues are fixed it may fix the Rocket Lake issues as well. @ChuckPa has been providing updates in this thread on the status of Tiger Lake.

Got the same issue on unraid 6.9.2, transcoding works but gives the same issue as your picture above with some formats.

So I updated to 6.10, transcoding just does not function anymore…

So don’t try that

I got the i5-11600 btw

Thanks for confirming Unraid 6.10 doesn’t work. Sorry to hear it breaks transcoding entirely!

Unraid 6.10 RC does work fine for other docker containers accessing QuickSync hardware.

I tried Jellyfin for fun and it has no problem with Rocket Lake HDR transcoding. It seems to be a Plex issue??

Exactly, which is why I started this thread as it is clear that this is a Plex issue.

I can’t even get h264/HD transcoding to work on my Rocket Lake box let alone HDR tone mapping :frowning:
Things were working until a few updates ago, but now…nada!

Do you mean software or hardware transcoding? What Rocket Lake CPU are you using?

just updated to the latest plex version. no luck.

I also went back from unraid 6.10 to 6.9.2 due to no hardware transcoding at all.

Can someone test with the new beta build? Changelog says it adds rocket lake support

According to the NUC Tiger lake thread the beta has been working well for transcoding. I’m not sure about 4K HDR specifically yet.

Seems to be working for me on unRaid 6.9.2 using latest LinuxServer Docker, Plex ver 1.25.0.5282 with no config/modprobe.d/i915.conf

Just had three streams going

So far no errors, even had a 4k transcode working for me

OMG YES!! I will test as well, thanks for letting us know!

Confirmed working! Tested with multiple different 4K HDR files on multiple devices and all played correctly with hardware transcoding, no artifacts

More than welcome, thank for you my first post tagged as Solution! I think the Plex devs did more than me, haha.

So happy I didn’t have to upgrade to an RC build on my only unRAID.
