Intermittent dropped frames/stutter until I restart Roku Ultra

I keep getting an annoying issue where movies will stutter for a brief second, usually right at the beginning of a new scene (possibly when there’s a sudden change in bitrate?). Once it starts to happen it happens with everything I throw at it (2 Mb/s HD, 40 Mb/s 4k, direct play, transcoding, etc…). It happens with every single file in the same manner until I restart the Roku Ultra. Then it doesn’t happen and everything plays smooth but at some point in the next few days it’ll start to happen again.

What i’ve ruled out:

  • Codecs: Happens with h264 and h265
  • Direct stream: Happens when transcoding and direct playing
  • Bitrate: Happens on 2 Mb/s HD files and 40 Mb/s 4k files (on wired gigabit connection)
  • Server hardware: 4.00 Ghz - 8 core CPU, benched 180 Mbps read storage
  • Doesn’t happen with other apps like Netflix, Prime, Disney+ (HD or UHD)
