Intermittent Plex 'unable to connect to content server' issue and general browsing slowness

Can anyone point me in the direction of how to troubleshoot this?

I find Plex sometimes unable to playback media on my Samsung TV and on my MacMini but it seems to be intermittent. The back end is a brand new Synology DS1511+ with upgraded RAM.

Also, browsing the menu options is occasionally PAINFULLY slow - like over 30 seconds to a minute each time i click a menu option. Any advice of what to check and where to look is really appreciated.

Thanks

Everything is wifi? might be weak signal

Hi Tij

No, NAS is connected to the other devices through a Gigibit switch over Cat 5 & Cat 6.

I tried two newly added movies to Plex. Couldn’t play on my PC or my Samsung TV (all though Plex Home Theatre).

Neither would play. I rebooted the NAS and now the menu’s have sped up and the movies now work.

I did look at the Plex log files but there are so many entries in there I don’t understand what I’m reading.

Any other suggestions?

  1. The DS1511 is the 2011 product. It’s not ‘new’. While it may be new to you, it’s 5 years old.
  2. The processor is the Intel Atom D525 with a passmark rating of 701 https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Atom+D525+%40+1.80GHz . This is the absolute minimum CPU performance needed to run PMS.
  3. Your database might simply need optimizing. This presents itself with “SLOW QUERY” messages in the log files.

Apologies ChuckPa, you are completely correct. Actually, I have a couple of months ago ported Plex from my old DS1511+ to a new DS1815+. Slip of the mind, I wrote the old NAS model number when posting. That said, I never had this issue using Plex on my old DS1511+ so feel the newer NAS (with GB extra RAM) should be able to handle it.

I’m currently running PMS v.1.3.3.3148 and have ‘Optimize database every week’ checked.

  1. Your database might simply need optimizing. This presents itself with “SLOW QUERY” messages in the log files.

I looked in a few “Plex Media Server.x.log” files and see multiple errors like “WARN - SLOW QUERY: It took 220.000000 ms to retrieve 50 items”. What are the next steps to eliminate this fault?

Thanks

Thanks - I moved the db to my windows machine and the integrity came up as OK. I compacted the db and put it back on the NAS and initial tests suggest it is working ok now.

Should the integrity have checked out as OK? I’m kinda out of my depth with this stuff as I’ve never played with the Plex back end other than migrating it between servers.
