Internal and External Remote Streaming

Sorry if this request was posted before but I did not find anything related to my issue.

Is it possible to set remote streaming quality individually for internal network connections and internet connections on a Plex Media Server or the Plex client for Android TV? It seems that the setting for remote streaming quality affects both local network streaming and internet streaming the same.

I have two Plex Media Servers for Windows at two locations (NY and NJ) and a NVIDIA Shield TV with Plex client in NY. I stream from the local network Plex Media Server in NY and the remote Plex Media Server in NJ. I can only set one option for the remote streaming quality on my client so if I set it high I can stream on my local network (NY) with great quality, but when I stream from NJ I get stuttering and have to change my client to a lower bit-rate in order to stream reliably from the NJ Plex Media Server.

I tried setting the upload bit-rate quality on my NJ Plex Media Server to a lower quality setting, but this doesn’t force the client to stream no higher than the bit-rate set on the server.

If this is not possible I am thinking to put in a feature request.

Thanks for your help.

Remote streaming refers to all streaming from outside your home network / the network your client is connected to.

Most client apps have 2 settings to manage video quality:

  • Home Streaming = quality within your home network
  • Remote or Internet Streaming = quality when streaming from a location outside the current network
