I have two users that use my Plex server remotely. Not a lot of bandwidth but my upstream at home is only 10Mbit. So there are some settings I need help with in making sure I’m setting them correctly.
LOCAL QUALITY: I set this at ORIGINAL, since my internal network is 1000Gbit.
REMOTE QUALITY: What exactly is this setting? I thought there would be an AUTO option, but there is not. I assume this is the MAX quality I would want my remote users to see? What if I select original (I know it can’t do that because of my upstream) so PLEX will be forced to transcode right? I’m really not sure what I should select this option is. Is it not good to select over my upstream cap? Or always select below it?
ONLINE QUALITY: I have no clue what this setting is at all. I thought online quality is the same as remote quality.
Then there’s direct stream, direct play, all that jazz. My PLEX server itself is installed on a very powerful high-end desktop using Windows 10. 64GB of memory, direct PCI hyper drive and all SSD’s, so the computer is capable. The computer grabs all the media content off my unraid server which can serve 110-120MB/sec constant.
Maybe someone that is familiar with these settings can explain some more what they are, which may also help other users having a hard time with them?
Thank you and happy summer here on the East Coast of NJ!
Also, how is that X10 router with Plex? Does it work just as well as a computer and is updated just as much?
