Internet and audio weirdness on onn's Android TV 4K Device

Server Version#: 1.24.3.5033
Player Version#: 8.23.1.28030

I’m testing out the “onn.” (that branded period is annoying) model of Android TV 4K. I have it connected to a recent-model Yamaha receiver that is otherwise working fine with other devices. I’ve seen the following problems that seem to be specific to this model:

  1. Even though the device is clearly connected, has an IP, and all other apps stream to the internet, Plex thinks it’s offline when opened. It takes a couple retries to get it to work, but even then I can’t switch to other home users because it thinks it’s offline. Another Plex user previously reported this with no reply.

  2. HDMI passthrough is broken. If I enable it, TrueHD transcodes to EAC3, but is silent nonetheless. And playing a DTS-HD file simply provides this error: “An error occurred while attempting to play this video. Please check your connection and try again”. It’s a consistent error.

  3. If I disable passthrough, TrueHD still transcodes to EAC3, but seems to play fine as PCM 5.1, I think (I have a 5.1 system so I can’t test 7.1). DTS-HD direct-plays, but seems to send PCM 2.0 to the receiver.

  4. I’ve seen the “next video stretching” issue on H265 files, as previously documented for the Chromecast w/ Google TV. I’m guessing if that issue is resolved, and this model actually gets updates, this will go away.

If a dev is around and would like more info about the device or some logs PM’d, please let me know.

Daytime bump the next day. Does anyone at Plex have this device to test yet? It’s really cheap and Walmart ships it.

I can’t comment on the other points but I too have the nasty video stretching on this device. It only occurs when autoplaying or manually playing from the “next up” page.

This issue has been ongoing for several months and it’s quite annoying. I had high hopes that it would have been fixed with the latest firmware update and/or one of the many server/client updates that I’ve taken since.

Server: 1.24.4.5081
Client: 8.23.1.28053

The CCwGTV appears to still be facing this issue so my guess is that once it is fixed the ONN (same SoC) will also be rectified.

@ChuckPa any thoughts on this?

Bumping after nine days.

Two week bump!

I can gather logs for any interested dev. It’s already on sale for 20 bucks if you’re in America, so it’s cheap to pick up a couple sample units, plus a number of people might buy it over the holidays…

Welp, four week bump. Any Android TV devs out there who wants logs or can order a cheap device to test?
