@ahiyahiya
Hello - hope you or one of your colleagues can help with this. When I add a new TV episode Plex intro detection rescans the entire TV show - all episodes, all seasons - even though it has already done so.
When I add a TV episode, I move the whole show folder out of the library, add the new episode and then move the show back to the library to be rescanned. Why? Because otherwise Plex shows individual episodes in “recently added TV” rather than the show which for me both looks messy and means that if you select that show from recently added it starts playing the latest episode rather than the first unwatched episode and means many more clicks from there to get to the first unwatched episode. Problem (bug?) described here:
Because this behaviour is either not seen as a bug or has never been fixed (in either case I have made my peace with it) the only way I know of to make Plex display recently added TV as shows rather than individual episodes as I want is to do what I describe in the second paragraph - move the whole show out of the library and back in again.
This process rescans the whole show which doesn’t take that long. For video preview generation, this process simply triggers a video preview generation of the extra episode(s) added which is fine - previously generated video previews survive intact.
However as per the topic title, all episodes and seasons are then rescanned for intros regardless of the fact that they have already been scanned before which takes quite a while with long running shows and is a complete waste of resources.
REQUEST: is it possible to limit rescanning intros to just the new episode that has not previously been scanned where episodes are re-added or at least just for that season in the same way that video preview generation works.
OR - even better could you address the long-running issue described above and in detail on the above link and make an option available to display new TV added as shows rather than individual episodes or seasons. This would be even better as in any event removing and re-adding a whole show just to get round Plex’s treatment of adding individual episodes wastes a lot of processing power particularly now with the wholesale rescanning of intros
This is your own doing then.
You are throwing away the results of the earlier detection runs and then wonder why the whole series had to be re-analyzed.
Respectfully no, I am doing it as a crude hack to get around Plex’s bizarre treatment of displaying new episodes. You don’t see Netflix and the like littering it’s screens with individual episodes. It displays a poster for the whole show which in my view should be the default for Plex failing which at least an an option. The way Plex does it by default just looks a mess and I’m not the only one that thinks so.
In any event I think the old adage applies here: if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.
If one of the devs would chime in with something more constructive I’d be grateful.
I don’t doubt his knowledge, but again respectfully, I wasn’t seeking advice. I understand what is happening and why it is happening. Nor was I seeking other users or moderators’ opinions or to debate the issue - this has already been debated on previous threads such as the one referenced above and I have never seen the point in raising it again - some people think the status quo is fine, others don’t. As I said, I have made my peace with it.
The point I am making is that the (I would call it a bug in the) intro scanner rescanning everything unlike the video preview scanner which doesn’t repeat what it has already done makes a bad situation (for me) even worse.
The developers for Plex apps have been quite responsive on the odd occasion in the past I have raised an issue and I thought the server developers may be similar. I was simply hoping one of the developers might make a comment (@ahiyahiya@StSimm1) even if this is just to say we get your point but we like it how it is. If they won’t, or won’t make a change then as you say I will just have to deal with it but I had hoped this would be treated as a constructive bug report. Comments from other users and moderators however knowledgeable on their own opinions were not my objective.
I won’t post any further to this thread unless one of the developers is able to make a comment as it is just creating unproductive white noise. All the best
