Introducing Prism, a highly versatile music app for iOS with Plex support. Looking for beta testers!

Hi Plex community,

I posted recently over on the Plex subreddit but figured I’d post here as well in case anyone missed it.

For the past couple of years I’ve been developing a music app for iOS aimed at people who prefer to curate their own music collection rather than sign up for a streaming service. Since this line of thinking fits the Plex philosophy perfectly (and I was already using Plex for other media), I decided to just integrate the app with Plex directly.

Why “versatile”?

The problem different music apps try to solve in various ways is finding and exposing the music you’d like to listen to at a point in time. Depending on the time of day, your mood or environment you may want to listen to different artists, albums or genres. Streaming services tend to solve this problem with a mix of machine learning and manual curation (“For You”). These are fine solutions (and are often very convenient), but offer little flexibility. Where possible, I always prefer to be given the tools to tune things myself. The Smart Playlist feature of e.g. iTunes and Plex Media Server offer this flexibility, but unfortunately neither of the companion iOS apps support the creation of these. Enter Prism.

Features

Check out the website for the full details, but here are the broad strokes:

  • Access music already located on your device, or add a free Plex account
  • Refine the songs you want to include in your playlist by adding one or more filters
  • Arrange how you want to view and play your playlist
  • Play your new playlist

Of course, you’re free to ignore most of these features, and just use it like a regular music app.

Feedback from those who have used the app has been very positive so far, so I’d love to know what the wider community thinks. This first release contains mostly just the fundamentals, but I have much more planned. Sign up for the beta, pre-order on the App Store (free), and let me know what you think.

I like the simplicity. Just wondering if you are going to offer chrome cast support?

I’ll likely add support for it in the future. With these types of features I’ll generally gauge by community demand, and I’ve already received a few requests for it.

Hm, looks like it was timing out trying to reach apple’s servers. I want to say iTunes Connect was down there for a bit.

This is working great on IOS 12. I use it with carplay everyday on my way to work! Just needs to finish the integration.

I have my Plex music library already synced to my phone in the Plex app for local playback. Is it possible to have Prism access that synced library instead of re syncing to the Prism app?

Unfortunately not. Apps can’t share document directories on iOS as far as I’m aware.

Hi,

just tested the preview app.
Very nice, exactly what I have been looking for in the past.
Though one feature would be a very nice addition, especially for music -> Equalizer.
Would it be possible to integrate a simple parametric eq in the future?

Best

Just found this app in the AppStore! Love it! The SQ is much better than the stock Plex app! Can we get CarPlay support in iOS 12 for this!? And maybe an EQ? AWESOME work sir!

Really enjoying this app, do you think it would be possible to add pitch control? I use it all the time on my old iPod classic, would love to be able to use it with my plex library!

Just found this excellent app, love the filters and the CarPlay support. Is “offline caching” still being developed? Then it would be an instant buy for me.

Yep - download support is currently in beta, aiming for an early February App Store release.

Glad you like it so far!

It’s still in the early stages (still reading up on it) but I do plan on adding an equaliser to the app at some point. Admittedly I’ve never heard of pitch control as an effect but I think once I have an equaliser in it’ll be possible to add such effects.

Awesome, I bought the app last week to support development, the normal plex app is just too buggy for music. Can’t wait to see how this goes, still getting used to the filter feature, is there any way to have a playlist shortcut on the bottom bar?
