Player Version#: latest (chrome and Xbox series x)
Hello everyone.
I’m really scratching my head with this one. Plex was working fine with x265 content last week. The only change is that I got a new motherboard and a M.2 drive and installed them. I restored Plex from a backup (basically I copied the AppData directories over to the new M.2 drive).
My wife was complaining that some movies were not playing. After turning on logging to the server, I found that it’s x265 (HEVC) files that are no longer working. Plex states that it’s an invalid decoder type? These files all played fine prior to the new motherboard/drive installs.
I’ve also verified that the files play on the server PC itself (where Plex server is running), with no issues using a media player.
I’m using Nvidia driver ‘527.37’. I’ve tried re-installing Plex, re-installing the Nvidia drivers… but to no avail.
Has anyone else experienced this before?
Hardware:
OS: Windows 11 - latest version
Plex Server: latest version 64bit
CPU: Ryzen 2600
GPU: Nvidia GTX 1050 TI
RAM: 16GB DDR4 @ 3200MHZ
Drives: M.2, 4TB HDD x 2, 8TB HDD
Hardware acceleration, decoding and encoding options are turned on in the transcoder settings.
Did you install the same version of Plex Media Server that you had before? The codecs are tied to a specific version, so if you install a different version of PMS, the restored Appdata folder, which has the codecs, may not work. Find and delete the “Codecs” folder in the Appdata folder, then restart PMS. It should recreate that folder and download the correct codecs.
Hello @MovieFan.Plex. I did install the same version, but tried your advice to be sure.
I quit Plex, deleted the codecs folder and restarted Plex. I then started playing a hevc movie and saw it downloaded a hevc decoder in the codecs folder.
The error did not charge, however. What can I try next?
I just installed Emby to see if it’s my system to blame for this, or Plex.
Emby played the affected content perfectly, first time. Hoping for a resolution here though. As much as I don’t want the task of migrating to another service, this isn’t the only issue I have with Plex and if unresolved, will ultimately be the straw that broke the camel’s back, and I’ll be cancelling my Plex pass.
Looking forward to hearing any other avenues I can explore to resolve this with Plex.
@anon18523487 thanks for the offer to look at the logs. I’ve decided I no longer want to dedicate any further time on trying to get to the cause of this issue.
I’ve been impressed with other software and am going to see if I prefer that to plex.
