Hi,
I’ve just signed up to Plex Pass mainly to be able to restrict content based on which room in my house the Plex is accessed from. So far so good.
I’ve created managed users and it’s working fine. I’m also trying to see how Invite Friends and Existing Plex User options work so:
- what is the difference here apart from that one has to be an existing Plex account and the other doesn’t?
- what are Plex access differences between these two and Managed User ?
- can I add logo to managed users profiles?
Thank you
Thanks Peter,
This article answers the second question.
Any ideas for the 1st and 3rd ?
Thank you
If I understand your question correctly, there should be no ‘difference’ as such. The person who has no account will be asked to create one through instructions given in the mail. Remember though, to be careful when inviting existing Plex accounts to your Home. One can only be part of one home, and those users should really only be ‘real people’ in your household. If you invite a friend to your Plex Home - who already is running a Plex Home himself - his Home (Plex that is) will be ‘destroyed’. There is no issues having both a Plex Home, with managed users and / or ‘real’ accounts, and having the usual Friends accounts too.
I do think that managed users should be able to change their picture. Have that user login on Plex Web, and at the top right corner (where it will be a picture of the current logo) chose in the drop-down menu ‘Account’ - hopefully it will work.
Thanks Peter,
I’ve managed to change the icons for each Managed User. Didn’t realise at first that you need to log into these accounts to do that.
Basically what I’m trying to do is to set two different accounts for two of my locations and also be able to restrict content for each Plex player within each location i.e.:
Plex Account 1 (with Plex Pass):
- Location 1 Room 1 (Main User) TV 1 - Without a PIN
- Location 1 Room 2 (Managed User) TV 2 - Without a PIN
Plex Account 2 (without Plex Pass)
- Location 2 Room 1 (Managed User) TV 3 - With a PIN
- Location 2 Room 2 (Managed User) TV 4 - With a PIN
All using one NAS server on a LAN at Location 1
so that way one account wouldn’t know about the other when accessed via TV.
Problem is that Plex Account 2 doesn’t have an option to create managed users so the only way seems to be:
Plex Account 1 (with Plex Pass)
- Location 1 Room 1 (Managed User) - With a PIN
- Location 1 Room 2 (Managed User) - With a PIN
- Location 2 Room 1 (Managed User) - With a PIN
- Location 2 Room 2 (Managed User) - With a PIN
which means that whenever I log into main account I have to enter a PIN which is a PaIN
If I disable it then Managed Users from Location 2 could switch to this account.
Any ideas?

Number one and two were answered by Peter_W
Number three… yes, YOU can change their Logo, If you have their PIN(for those who created one). Follow the steps Peter_W gave you except you choose the user from the drop down.
Not really, no. I think you have to ‘bite the bullet’ on the PIN-pain.

Do what you stated at the end with this exception…
On the TV’s that you want only main account to be on just login with main account PIN and then in settings tick sign in automatically which will not prompt for a PIN. Then do the same with any other TV’s that only require one user.
Yes, that would kind of solve it apart from when switching between users for the Location 1, which would still require PIN.
Thanks
Agreed, it would require a PIN for the users to be entered but the nice thing about doing this way is that the watched state is tracked for each user separately(no on deck issues).
For my two kids I made this simple…
PIN for the toddler is 5555 which just means press the select button 4 times… she does this with no effort and she’s 3.
My son who is older and more capable he has to press up first to get to the 2’s then it is 2222.
Any users that are adults have their own PIN(non sequential) with the exception of the guest account which again is sequential press down to the 8’s and select 8888.
So really it is only my account which is secure to any extent… but my children should not see me second server… the naughty one. :o This server is only shared to my account and not accessible outside the network.
easy peasy.
Just a thought
