iOS app - Remote video quality limited issue

Server Version#: 4.47.1
Player Version#: Plex iOS 7.10.1

I am facing what seems to be a bug with the iOS app.

Whenever I am streaming remotely using cellular connection, the player’s “Playback Settings” menu displays the following warning message: “Video quality limited: Connection is on WAN and limit is set” and the “Convert to” options are limited to 2Mbps.

Notice the “4G” in the top right corner, indicating I am on a cellular network, I will come back to this later.

Both my server and iOS app are correctly configured:

Server

  • Plex Web / Quality → Video quality: set to 12 Mbps (I tried Maximum as well)
  • Settings / Remote Access → “Fully accessible outside your network”
  • Settings / Remote Access → Internet upload speed = 17 Mbps
  • Settings / Remote Access → Limit remote stream bitrate = 12 Mbps (1080p)

iOS App

When the streaming session starts, it indeed starts with the correct settings - 10 Mbps as seen in the screenshot above. However, the issue is happening when trying to change this setting from the player. It is only possible to “Conver to” up to 2Mbps.

In addition, if I trick the app into believing it is not using a cellular connection by pairing my phone to my iPad which is itself using a 4G SIM card (notice the pairing icon in the top right corner), I still get the “Video quality limited” warning message, but I have access to all the “Convert to” option.

Therefore, I believe that this is a bug occurring when the app detects cellular connection. In this case, it does not offer all the “Convert to” options although it will start the streaming session using the parameters indicated in the app settings, even if they are higher than 2Mbps.

Can someone in the Plex team investigate this? I will happily provide more details if asked.
