iOS Plex app via tailscale not recognizing server (auto and manual)

Server Version#: 1.41.4.9463
Player Version#: Version 8.45

On my iPhone can’t connect to Plex server via the app but it works fine on the iPhone browser.

Both player and server are connected to Tailscale networks.

Server is a windows PC with Plex Media Server installed.

When trying to manually add the server I get error 401.

Edit: After adding the tailscale ip adn magicdns urls for iphone and server in custom server access URLs and list of ip addresses and network that are allowed without auth I get error -1001 when trying to manually add the server

Exactly. Plex support won’t admit it but there are issues with the app.

Try this:
Under network make sure ‘Enable Relay’ is ticked. and under Remote Access make sure Remote Access is enabled (even if you don’t open a port on your router)

Not sure why this post is going unanswered by Plex developers but bumping it. @elan please have someone look into this.

I would love to see better support for routing over vpn as well (i tried to setup tailscale the other day, the client and server have tailscale installed, but plex does not recognize it as a local network setup)
Supporting this would help increase security for end users, I don’t really want to leave port 32400 exposed on my router.

Oh actually guys, i had a poke through the network options on the server.
There is an option to add IP’s to be considered local, this may allow tailscale ip’s to be considered local. sadly i can not test, i am about to go away for a few days, will try when i get back.

“LAN Networks option”
“Comma separated list of IP addresses or IP/netmask entries for networks that will be
considered to be on the local network when enforcing bandwidth restrictions. If set, all other IP addresses will be considered to be on the external network and will be subject to external network bandwidth restrictions. If left blank, only the server’s subnet is considered to be on the local network.”

Sadly i tried to get tailscale working, with limited success. plex network setup and different apps like plexamp have certain expectations that make vpn setup a little odd. I ended up sticking with port forwarding and strict tls and even then on a synology box i had to convert the lets encrypt certificate to a p12 format, not easy for many users.
