IOS Plex Client unable to connect to Thecus NAS Plex Media Server

Server Version#: Version 1.14.1.5488
Player Version#: 6.12

Hi, Following a recent update to the Plex IOS app and an IOS update to 13.4.1 I find that I am no longer able to see any media from my Thecus NAS. In fact the NAS is no longer shown as a source! I am not sure if the IOS update has caused the problem or the Plex Client update!? Curiously the Plex client on my Nvidia Shield TV (8.0.2.17816) still sees and works with the Thecus NAS, so I won’t be updating the client there that’s for sure.

I understand that Thecus are clearly no longer supporting Plex on their platforms, which is a shame. I am running the latest version of Plex that is supported by them, so have no way to update to the latest version of Plex Media Server.

Is this a known consequence of the latest Plex Client update, or IOS 13.4.1? Is this a known issue, or is there a workaround, or is my Thecus NAS now fubar as far as Plex is concerned?

Many questions…struggling for answers. Hopefully somebody can help?

Many thanks

From what I’ve seen, not so much an issue of the Plex client or iOS but a combination of new Plex clients vs. old PMS versions. Not sure about Thecus NAS… can you update that PMS of yours to the latest version (1.19.3 – publicly released yesterday)

Unfortunately Thecus only provide a kit up to 1.14.1.5488, so I’m totally stuck. It’s a shame Thecus appear to have abandoned Plex :frowning:

Wrong quote, sorry

You can’t mount it via docker / container in that NAS? Just because it does not have native support does not mean you can not manage it as a linux app I would think?

Sorry I am not sure I understand your reply? Thecus have stated their firmware needs updating to support certain libraries that Plex now requires. This has been outstanding from Thecus for over a year now and it doesn’t look like it will be forthcoming anytime soon.

Does Thecus not support containers or Docker for installing apps they do not support as native in their OS? Businesses often have apps not directly supported and would install them as a VMware, I would think this could be a way for you to run the latest Plex version going forward?

Yeah if only it were that simple! Apparently the Thecus kernal doesn’t allow dockers! Looks like I’ll be selling my NAS and buying something else that works.

or keep it as bare storage and add a something like a NUC to run your PMS

Yeah true. I’m currently having a play with QEMU which should provide some VM capabilities…just reading the user guides now! :flushed: :scream: :scream: :scream:

Just to close off this thread and for the benefit of other Thecus owners, I managed to get Debian running within a QEMU/KVM virtual environment on my Thecus N5810Pro, quite impressed if I’m hones [Hint: Use the LocalDisplay+KVM Module that Thecus issued, it makes like a lot easier!] I even installed Plex Server into this environment as well, but if I’m honest, it’s not a long term solution. It works, but it really hammers the NAS, which is not a surprise really.

I have decided to buy an Nvidia Shield TV Pro for Plex Server duties, referencing my multimedia store on the Thecus NAS. I will continue to use the Thecus NAS for the time being as a File Store only, but will be planning to retire it and replace with a Synology box I suspect in the longer term

And a final final update, it looks like Plex have updated the client software to 6.12.1 and that now allows it to connect to my PMS on my Thecus server…whoop!:clap:
