This announcement has also just been posted in the forum
It basically means that future player versions will only work with Plex Media Server setups with a minimum version of 1.15.2, starting with the players for iOS and Apple TV.
If you have an old installation on Thecus that might you won’t be able to update. Based on what I could find you’re correct… there’s no more downloads / updates available and most models appear to be no longer supported (at least I cannot find anything else).
That being said… if you can no longer update your server and your server is older than 1.15.2 you should look into disabling automatic app updates on those platforms (e.g. iOS, Apple TV but also the others).
Plex Media Server 1.15.0.647 is now available to Plex Pass users in the Beta update channel
This version contains numerous changes and a lot of invisible behind the curtains stuff. There a few caveats and some missing builds at this point:
Notes:
Thecus Builds for Thecus devices will not be available at this time. Thecus is working on a firmware update that allows the new PMS to run on their devices.
After researching it pretty extensively the latest Plex available for Thecus NAS devices appears to be 1.14.1.5488. I’ve also reached out to Thecus and they were unhelpful (their reply: “We afraid no plan for further Plex version, and no new NAS model which support new version Plex.”).
If I understand the Plex statement correctly, we will no longer be able to watch any content on mobile devices or through the web browser once this update goes into effect, is that correct?
What would be a work-around? I’m considering disabling updates on the app. Anyone else have any suggestions?
If you cannot update your server to 1.15.2, you will not be able to connect from future Plex clients.
E.g. Plex for iOS / tvOS 7.4 is the latest version for those platforms that’ll support PMS versions older than 1.15.2. The same will be true for future versions of Plex Web – so while you’ll no longer be able to connect your server from the hosted version of Plex Web (http://app.plex.tv/desktop), you’ll still be able to run it from the bundled version installed alongside your PMS.
I did not yet see the announcements for other client types but the story will basically be the same.
For common platforms like iOS/tvOS or Android, disabling automatic updates should prevent any hiccups for you. Personally I strongly recommend disabling automatic updates whenever some platform in your environment is stuck to an old OS or platform.
Then the way forward for you might eventually be to get a kind of mini PC and install Plex server onto this. Continue using the NAS for media storage only.
I found myself in the same situation with my Thecus N5810pro NAS,where Plex is no longer supported. I bought a Shield TV pro and that now runs my Plex server and have pointed it to the network file store on the NAS for all the film/picture content.
It works well. I have fed back my displeasure to Thecus support, but I’m sure they are not bothered. When the Thecus eventually needs replacing I will be buying a replacement from anybody but Thecus!
After following these threads for months now, I can say that I’ve safely converted the old Thecus to a xpenology box and solved for this and many other gripes I have with their platform. Highly recommend!
