Ipad - family sharing purchase

Plex was app was purchased on my wife iPad. I isntalled on my ipad, went to watch somthing and received message: Playback Limit. I choose ‘Activate’. On the next screen I choose ‘Activate $4.99’. I receive a message ‘Item already purchased. A family member has already purchased this. You get it for free’. I press OK. I then receive an error message ‘Uh-Oh! The operation couldn’t complete’.

I have tried uninstalling, then restarted the ipad, reinstalled the app. Still same message. Is this a bug in the app or did I miss a step.

thanks!

When you do the family sharing purchases it’s a bit of a weird process depending on the app so you might need to do it this way to get the “shared” purchase:

  1. Go to the App Store on iPad\iPhone
  2. Click on your profile picture in the upper right
  3. Click on Purchased
  4. Click on your wife’s name under “Family Purchases”
  5. Use the Search to find Plex
  6. Install from there

It’s an intentional process but not explained well by Apple and some apps play better with the family sharing than others it seems.

Found this: Unlocking or Activating Plex for iOS | Plex Support

Where one highlight there is that it states the “family administrator” has to purchase the app for family sharing to work.

That’s not how most family sharing apps work; the point of family sharing is for anybody on the family sharing setup to share purchases with each other, not just the family administrator to the rest of the family.

So that “family sharing” is misleading since you can only find that specific note about “must be purchased by family administrator” buried in a support doc and not in the iOS App Store details - though there are lots of other specifics about the purchase options - nor in the in-app purchase pop-up.

It might be designed that way on purpose to specifically limit folks from using Family Sharing as a “friend sharing” setup.

Maybe there’s something a Plex employee\dev can do or clarify or fix it but I’m gonna guess not… though it would be good for Plex to adjust their app setup if that’s the case.

Sorry, but I think you might’ve gotten bit by Plex’s common gap between what internal Plex folks know about Plex and what is realistically reasonable to expect regular users to know.

I do appreciate the help. I am happy to pay for the app again just so I can get this to work. But the Apple app store wont let me. I did talk to apple support and they were not able to help.

I was told you don’t tap on “Activate”, but scroll further down and “Restore Purchase”.
