Hi, I am a Plex Pass user since 2013, but I still can’t figure this out. This year I removed Plex Home from my Plex, since my mother & father aren’t living with me and there were security risks with having someone outside of your household being in Plex Home, but this has been more than a hassle and I am probably going to invite her back in.
First, she stopped being able to stream after 1 minute on her iPad, we tried to “restore purchases” in app purchase (we are in the family sharing in Apple) and it doesn’t work – other ios apps do work.
So I had her download the App via App store using my Purchases (option given for Family sharing), but still logging in into her account and that worked for 1-2 months, now it’s asking the activation dialog after App Update.
The problem isn’t the $5, I would pay ten times more to get the dialog going away if I can, but she doesn’t have a credit card in her Apple ID. Basically how can I get these dialogs go away for good on her iPad ?
I don’t know how to do this short of logging into her apple ID, download the app, then paying for it which is a bit cumbersome. Apparently Apple ID family sharing has purchase sharing, so they can buy using my CC so will try that next.
I’ll try those if the previous method doesn’t work. Thanks.
Note that putting them in your Plex Home means they log in with your account which you may not want. And Plex Pass is $5/month forever, or a big fee for lifetime, so it is a more expensive option.
Family sharing only works with the one time activation purchase for the app only.
A Plex Pass subscription purchase cannot be shared.
No it doesn’t. If they have their own account they can log in with their own username and password which. Folks with a Plex Pass can add regular accounts to their Plex Home. Which they shoudl have since they are logging in separately anyway and getting the prompt to purchase.
The user switcher is still part of Plex Home so the home admin just needs to make sure they have a PIN on their own account so others cannot switch to them.
Thank you. That’s how she used to login via her account before. She has her own user id / password / pin and so do I (different pins)
But doesn’t mean that if you’re in a Plex Home you could theoretically login into the other user if you know their pin (even if you have different userID + passwords) ?
I ask this for example if someone gets a hold of her password, they could try to guess my Pin ?
jfyi - I have 2FA enabled with Authenticator but she doesn’t.
Why would they know your pin? I mean they have 9999 tries I suppose if they sit there and try to brute force it. But that isn’t much different than your bank card.
To be clear IMO they should just pay the $5. If both your mom and dad have apple ID’s she can buy it and use family share to let him use it too.
I agree, but in general parents don’t use the best pins
The $5 isn’t the issue, as I mentioned I would pay 10x. The issue was the difficulty where I couldn’t figure out how to pay it for her as she lives 7k miles away from me, and doesn’t have a CC. But as you mentioned Apple Family sharing also let’s the admin share their CC (I didn’t know that was possible)
Nah, I am just trying to get it the easiest way for them to login… they are not computer literates, and I give them directions via WhatsApp or Facetime audio calls.
If I can’t figure out the payment via Apple ID Family sharing payment, I’ll add her back to Plex Home.
Thanks again for all your help (and everyone else here!)
