iPad: Player Controls disappear on external monitor

The controls disappear when I watch a film on the external monitor connected to the iPad.
It just shows the video and nothing else, only way to control it, is with the controls in the notification area.
This is with Stage Manager enable and the app is on the external monitor not on the iPad.
I want to watch the video alongside other activities.
