BUG: iPad App unusable for playback with Stage Manager on external display

When using an external display with Stage Manager on iPadOS, the Plex experience is really bad:

  1. When opening the app on the iPad screen, then moving it to the external monitor, and then starting playback, no video will be played at all. Audio works but it just shows the media cover where the video should be.

  2. When opening the app on the external display, video playback works but there are no controls at all. One can control playback with hardware buttons on the keyboard but it is impossible to switch language, subtitle, quality etc. It is also impossible to exit the app except force quitting it, because there are no controls at all.

  3. Using Safari with app.plex.tv makes the experience a bit better, because you can at least play the video and have controls. However when setting the video to fullscreen, ugly bright white bars appear at the top and bottom of the screen. This ruins the experience.

Definitely a Plex issue, because other apps like YouTube or Disney+ work as expected.

Are there any workarounds until these bugs are fixed?

Yep same issue for me since launch of stage manager, basically Plex don’t support it. Nor is Airplay supported…or reliable downloads…or a client doesn’t crash multiple times a week.

Still applicable in Jan ‘25 …

Still an issue with Plex 8.45 on an iPad Pro 11" M2 with iPadOS 18.1.1 and a USB-C 4K external display.

I’m also having this issue with an iPad Pro M4.

Newest iOS app seems to fix the issue

Agreed this works well. I’ve complained quite a bit about the new app, however this is an example of the better that is slowly becoming more and more exposed.

External monitor support on iPadOS with stage manager seems very reliable and stable.

I’m guessing this update is a Swift re-write of the code base, aligning it with current iPadOS/iOS feature sets.
