External screen support iOS version (2025.13.0 (1025))

Server Version#: none
Player Version#: 2025.13.0 (1025)
Hi guys,

Before traveling, I usually download personal media on my iPhone/iPad and use Plex in the hotel, connecting to a bigger screen via an HDMI link. Generally, the video/audio is displayed on the screen, and the controller is on the iPhone/iPad screen. To limit battery drain, we could also shut down the iPhone/iPad screen while keeping the video running on the TV. That was great (and it’s the case for the majority of streaming apps except for YouTube on iOS).

Now, the only solution seems to be mirroring. Due to mirroring, you end up with black borders on each side of the bigger screen, as TVs are not a perfect match for iPhone/iPad resolution. This is not a great experience for shows. Additionally, since it’s mirroring, you need to keep your device ON too!

Do you have plans to roll out the previous behavior for external screens? Or do we need to use Stage Manager (for iPad only)?

Thanks for your feedback.

TV out used to be supported, but no longer is. Please bring it back. I’d like to use it with XR glasses plugged in to an iPad/iPhone. Works for other apps like VLC.

The Stage Manager solution isn’t suitable as the iPad locks when playing back on the external display and both displays turn off.

Commenting to add my support for bringing it back - is there an issue tracker where we can upvote it? I’ve found it frustrating already once when using my iPad with HDMI output.

I have the same issue and need a fix.
Also I don’t get control buttons during playback via HDMI. So I can‘t paus, skip…
It worked fine with the old app.

Also adding my voice to request the old HDMI video output behavior be restored.
