I recently purchased this cable from Amazon to display video from my iPhone or iPad in my car. After the simple connections were made I started up a movie in plex to test. The tv is mirroring the iPhone just fine, but the movie isn’t playing. Audio is coming out and the time bar is progressing with every passing second. But the video that should be playing isn’t - just a still image of the poster of the movie.
Is there a setting that I need to display to enable the video to be mirrored on the iPhone and the car?
I’m on a new iPad pro, using the official Apple lightning to HDMI dongle (Lightning Digital AV Adapter) and I’m also unable to watch Plex videos on my TV. The app is updated and so is iOS, but all I get is the mirroring view. Other video apps such as YouTube, present the timeline and other controls on the iPad screen and play the Fullscreen video on the TV, but not Plex.
What’s most frustrating is that this issue seems to have persisted for years. Great team, great app, weird that they haven’t addressed this persistent issue since it’s so central to the ‘have your media on the go’ spirit of the brand.
Plex, any update on your efforts would be appreciated.
same on dock-hdmi. will refund the app since it is worthless to me without that feature.
is the plex team really so small that bugs from years ago cannot get fixed?
This issue is still happening on iOS, 5+ months after it was posted here. I am experiencing this on iOS 11.2 and 11.3 on my iPad Pro and iPhone. I am using the official HDMI adapter and the latest Plex app. Video simply does not output correctly. Instead you just see the timeline and the normal Plex control UI. Video does not appear anywhere. To contrast, if I visit Plex.TV via Safari, HDMI output playback works totally fine.
This is definitely an app bug that needs fixing ASAP. iOS 11 has been around for 6+ months so the continued existence of this bug is unacceptable. I do feel the iOS app is heavily neglected and bugs are allowed to fester for so long. Reminds me of how the Sync feature was broken for over a year.
Hi, I’m actually working on fixing some overscan issues with external displays and have that exact same setup (iPad Pro and iPhone, official lightning->HDMI adapter).
Regardless of overscan issues (that cause unnecessary black bars around video), I’m able to successfully play video on a TV with an HDMI cable connected.
Can you provide me a list of steps so I can try to reproduce the issue here?
For example, this is what I do and always works:
Turn on TV
Connect cable to my iPad
Open Plex
Start playback
Connecting the adapter after Plex is already open should also work.
If these steps don’t work, can you please turn on verbose logging and send some logs to hugo@plex.tv?
I just got a Apple HDMI cable for my Iphone 7+ (current iso) and its also having the issue with only displaying the artwork of the tv show or movie and playing the sound to the tv/movie.
I have not really spent time trying to figure it out yet. is there a plex document on how its to be setup? I really would like to get this to work for my phone.
so far what I have tried is (my son has tried this on his phone as well no luck)
plug the hdmi cable in to the phone
start the plex app
play a file.
Ive played around with the order and it didn’t help.
I’m going to try a few other things. like reinstall the app and running another app first, maybe an itunes movie first to see how that works.
any suggestions would be great.
