Is 4k-10bit or 1080p-10bit supported on Sansung-tizen with plex app?

Server Version#: 1.18.8.2527
Player Version#: 4.25.2

Hi! I got a problem that I can’t directly play neither 4k-10bit nor 1080p-10bit on my smart TV(samsung KS8800 with tizen OS), although my smart TV support directly play 4k-10bits video through usb.

I did a small test:
In windows 10 platform, I could play both 4k-10bit and 1080p-10bit using plex app.
In my Android smart phone(one plus 7T pro), I could play 1080p-10bit but 4k-10bit can’t.

Is there any way to solve this problem? Or 10-bits video is not supported to be played on the samsung plex app?

Be aware of the effects of subtitles and audio formats with Plex SmartTV apps.

  • Enabling PGS or VOBSUB subtitles forces a video transcode.
  • If the audio is transcoding, enabling text subtitles (SRT) forces a video transcode.

Samsung no longer supports dts audio in their TVs. No TV supports TrueHD audio. Using either format in the Plex app results in an audio transcode.

Play the video(s) with no subtitles and AC3 audio (or other that direct plays), and see what happens.

You can monitor playback in the Plex Dashboard to see if the video or audio is transcoding.

If the issues persist:

  1. Attach Plex XML (as .txt file) or MediaInfo text output for each video.

  2. Gather log files

  • Make sure PMS is set for DEBUG log files only.
  • Play the media for ~10 - 15 seconds, or until problem is recreated
  • Wait 1 minute for server to settle down
  • Pull log files and attach entire zip file.

Also very helpful if you can provide the specs of your PMS box (CPU type, RAM, OS version, etc.) when you collect logs.

Thanks a lot! The problem has been solved when i turn off the subtitle and change the audio to AC3. My smart TV could directly play the video.

One more question, Is that a BUG or a problem hard to solve. I mean, in my opinion, If the format of audio is not be supported by the smart TV, then plex should only transcode the audio or the subtitle. Could I expect a future version of plex that video can be directly played with an unsupported format of audio?

From what the developers have mentioned on other threads, Plex has to transcode the video to keep the video, audio, and subtitles in sync with each other.

How much of that is due to the TV hardware and software versus Plex software I do not know.

Things have been that way since I started using Plex about 4 1/2 years ago.

I would not expect it to change any time soon.

Every Plex client has its own set of limitations.

My primary Plex client is a Nvidia Shield, which runs Android TV. It direct plays image based subtitles. However, it still has the limitation that if the audio is transcoding and subtitles are enabled, then the video transcodes (All AndroidTV devices have this limitation).

I use the Shield instead of the Plex app on my LG TV, as the Plex LG app has the same subtitle limitations as the Plex Samsung app (The LG Plex app direct plays dts audio, but that is because LG licensed the codec from dts).

My Shield connects to a Denon receiver which supports most audio formats, which minimizes issues with audio transcoding (Shield <–> Denon <–> LG TV).

I do not have an AppleTV or Roku device, but I’m sure they have their own set of peculiarities.
