Play files w/o transcoding on Samsung TV & Synology

I have a Samsung TV and Synology DS218
I have videos 720 and 1080p, which play with DS video. Samsung TV does not transcode when using DS video.
The same videos will not play with plex. Plex is trying to transcode. I used the path with deny write access to try to stop that. It doesn’t work. It’s still writing transcodes somewhere

The one in question is 720p AVC AAC
All set on player to original quality etc etc.

Why can’t plex play if DS can play?

Take a look at the direct supported formats for smart TVs: What media formats are supported? | Plex Support

That’s what I’m saying, that’s format is listed in the page you provided. It’s also a format that is played with ds video which also doesn’t support any transcoding. So by all the different information this format should be played without transcoding by plex.

There are some videos which you can tell is not being transcoded by Plex but others where it just takes 10 seconds at the start and it’s trying to transcode for whatever reason

What path did you change? If anywhere in the /Plex share, change it back.

Which model of Samsung TV?

Make sure you have a supported model. See Which Smart TV models are supported?

If your TV is supported:

Please provide the XML information for one of the movies that transcodes. See Investigate Media Information and Formats for details on gathering the XML information. The forum does not support .XML attachments. Zip the information or change the extension to .txt before adding it to the thread (Drag it into the message window. It will attach at the cursor location).

Configure the Samsung Plex app to log to the server at the debug level.

Configure the Plex Media Server for debug, not verbose, level logging. See Reporting issues with Plex Media Server for details on configuring the server. Make sure you configure the Plex Media Server settings, not the Plex web client settings (it is a common mistake).

With no other users streaming, play the video for ~30 seconds. Do not enable subtitles, as doing so may result in transcoded video.

Stop playback. Wait at least a minute for the server to log everything.

Pull the log files (See the Reporting Issues doc) and attach the ZIP file to the thread.

Path changed to one of my media folders, then added a deny write on it.

Here’s the media XML

Thanks for the info.

If you play the show with subtitles turned off does the video or audio still transcode?

You can monitor playback via the Plex Dashboard. If necessary, toggle the button on the top right to show details.
