It’s alive!!! haha. That seems like an encouraging step. Thanks again for helping. I’ll keep an eye on this thread and try to help more, and complain less. This issue doesn’t even bother me that much but I guess it stirred up some old salty feelings about the DVR issue. But that’s irrelevant to this. Cheers and good luck resuscitating your NAS build.
I have a lot of tools plus I dare not disclose any information about Plex internals (which could be recorded if I were to remote share someone’s machine)
Thanks for keeping in the loop cuz it just killing me so annoying and so irritating my experience that used to be flawless is now kind of like I don’t know I just want it back to nice and enjoying streaming every time I open a movie that has it it’s just like oh God not again
Host is built. Wrangled with a distro version - mobo incompatibility. Seems the Ubuntu HWE kernel is NOT advised , Turns out the 5.11 kernel has been obsoleted and dropped everywhere
The physical build is complete and stable now. Networking completed.
NFS services are up and solid at 20 GbE.
Media contents are reloading onto the volume at 450 MB/sec so it will need another 15 hours to finish.
LXD is setup so I can create my workspace for our tasks in there.
Not sure if this is helpful or not, but I can reliably force the frozen video on play to happen with the following steps on my Shield Pro 2019. This behavior has been present for months.
(prerequisite: have a screen saver enabled)
Pause a video. Any video, whether a ripped movie on my NAS, or a program recorded with my HDHomerun to the attached USB SSD.
Wait for the screen saver to start.
Press the select button on the remote to clear the screen saver. The paused video frame will have advanced ~5 seconds from where it was before the screen saver started.
Press play. The audio will be where you originally paused, but video still frozen 5 seconds in the future. When the audio catches up to the video, video playback restarts (and may or may not be in sync with the audio).
I’m aware that the screen saver wasn’t the main part of the original problem.
I also see this same behavior when starting videos, as per the example with the Seinfeld video several posts back. This behavior is identical to what I see is triggered by the screen saver.
Just thinking that perhaps easily and reliably forcing the issue could help Plex with troubleshooting. Perhaps the screen saver issue is linked.
I’ve made countless reinstalls / swaps between versions.
I have it down to the shortest distance I can get.
My current findings:
8.25.0.28336 will play without issue (including the Picard video) provided the Shield is restarted after installation.
8.25.0.28665 has frozen video at start and other issues reported here. I have given Engineering my logs which capture both the successful and unsuccessful playback with the test video.
I should also add that this appears to be a program initialization problem because, when it gets itself twisted up, restarting and a few playback attempts, will put it back to right. (I’ve also informed Engineering of this)
EDIT: Chatted with Engineering after submitting. Progress.
EDIT 2
We have identified:
The frames are flowing when play is clicked – evidenced by the audio
Video is not displaying until the first Key frame is encountered.
The first frame being sent is the key frame so the error is deeper.
Thankfully, I found this thread as I thought I was going nuts seeing this same issue on my 2019 Shield Pro.
First, a big thank you to ChuckPA for your help in organizing this issue. I recently noticed this behaviour on certain titles in my collection, including some that had previously worked without issue. It’s clear this was a fairly recent bug introduced as the behavior was very specific and has never been seen before:
Start video playback and Plex will start up on a frozen image of the video (4-5 seconds in) with the audio playing from the start of the video.
Once the audio hits that frozen video mark (ie 4-5 seconds in) the video will start playing
I can replicate this every time on certain 4K episodes of “Only Murders In the Building”. Let me know if you need any more log samples for the engineering team and I’ll upload them here.
I should add that on my 2019 Shield Pro the issue only occurs on the native Plex client and not the Kodi Plex client.
