I have the latest DSM 6 install on my Synology DS2419+ working great with my Plex server which is also hosted on my Synology. I get full direct play with Dolby Vision & Atmos when using my Nvidia Shield Pro, I couldn’t be happier with how Plex currently works.
However, I would like to upgrade to DSM 7.1 but I am absolutely terrified to go through the Plex migration. I have had to jump through so many hoops to get some of my media matched, artwork added, organized, etc… I do not want to risk just having to start all over again and setup everything from scratch.
Has the upgrade process gotten to a point where it can be achieved without the risk of having to do a fresh Plex install and add all my libraries again?
I’ve read all the guides on how to do the migration. I just want to hear from people who have successfully performed the upgrade. How did it go? Is it worth it? Did you have to do a fresh install?
I have spent an incredible amount of time getting Plex to work and adding all my media, if I have to start from scratch and do it all over again I will go crazy.

If you
- don’t panic
- don’t close / migrate away from the Package Center page while the migration is running (“Installing” or “processing”)
- don’t restart DSM
- don’t delete anything unless instructed
You’ll come through it with your server intact.
The physical migration (processing and reorganization of your metadata for DSM 7) takes about 3 minutes for each 1000 media files (movies, episodes, music, and photos) you have indexed in PMS.
All you need to do is follow the instructions I show in the popups and everything will be as it was under DSM 6.
Should you miss a step (which does happen from time to time), it’s easily remedied without losing ANY metadata.
Listen to ChuckPA - he knows what he’s talking about. I migrated from DSM 6.x .> DSM 7.x and I don’t remember having a problem with that. I also switched from Synology’s Plex app running PMS in a Docker container so I could take advantage of HW transcoding. Chuck helped me on that too.
I put off my DSM 6.x to 7.1 upgrade mainly due to being reluctant to messing with Plex. A couple of weeks ago I made the plunge, and I’m glad to report the process was fairly seamless and no data loss. I did futz up the permissions on the old Plex folder, so my first migration attempt failed. However, I fixed the permission issue and the migration completed without issue.
My advice is take it SLOW, thoroughly read the how-tos, and be patient.
