Plex update Synology DSM 6.2 to DSM 7 - custom changes

Server Version#: DSM 6.2
Player Version#: latest
<If providing server logs please do NOT turn on verbose logging, only debug logging should be enabled>

Dear all,

I have currently prepared everything except my Plex Media Server on my Synology NAS Running DSM 6.2 for the upgrade to DSM 7.

If I upgrade to DSM 7, do I need to install another version of Plex Media Server?
I also would like tot know if my custom changes (Media Titles, categories and collections) would remain unchanged after the upgrade to DSM 7 and the installation of the new version of Plex Media Server?

Many thanks for the support and information.

Kind regards,

Robin

Here’s the guide on how to upgrade…

This will keep the server database intact (incl. any custom changes).

Many thanks for the quick response.
As it deels, the upgrade might go smoother than I first thought

To add to the @tom80H’s post…

Synology forced several changes between DSM 6 & 7. The main two are that Plex runs under the username plexmediaserver instead of plex, and the Plex Data Folder is located in /plexmediaserver instead of /plex.

You need to uninstall the DSM 6 version of Plex Media Server. It will not run on DSM 7. You can do this before or after updating the NAS to DSM 7.

Do not delete the plex user or the /plex shared folder.

You then install the DSM 7 version of Plex Media Server. You can use the version in Synology Package Center, 1.29.2.6364, or download the current version from plex.tv.

When installing Plex, don’t just click OK/Next. Pay attention to the on-screen prompts regarding permissions. You’ll have to set some permissions manually to give user plexmediaserver access to your media files.

During the installation, Plex will move your database, etc. from /plex to /plexmediaserver. This will take time. A rough estimate is 1 minute for every 1000 media files. Let the process run. If you interrupt it, then it has to start over from the beginning.

Most of all, if something goes wrong, don’t freak out and start deleting things, installing multiple versions, etc. Just write back to the forum. Someone will be around to help.

Many thanks for the additional information.
This is very useful and I will keep it in mind when upgrading later this week

After a successful migration does Plex still require the /plex folder? Mine is pretty large and I wouldn’t mind recovering some space but I don’t want risk corruption. Anyone have experience removing this folder after moving to DSM 7?

After a successful migration, the “Plex” shared folder should be empty except for any personal files / media you might have

If this is the case, you can delete it or use it as you deem appropriate.

Also, user ‘Plex’ can be deleted. We don’t use “Plex” anymore

Yup, I can confirm that is what happened. All data from /plex was removed after the Migration was complete except for a single file ‘Migration.log’. Thanks for the info!

I have it write “Migration.log” in the Plex share –

  1. easy to find if there are problems
  2. captures all error messages
  3. shows you the time required for each step of the process.
  4. avoids panic about “What happened to my server data !?!?!”
