This can make sense if the server is sufficiently powered and you get sufficient bandwidth to stream.
The initial setup is a little more tricky as you’ll need an SSH tunnel to connect to the server to complete the installation. This is detailed in the setup support articles.
As you’re not restricted to a single Plex server… just give it a try before fully migrating there…
I have no experience with this type of set-up, but I would check how “unlimited” your space really is (usually there is some sort of fair use policy) and how much bandwith you’re allowed to use. That last part can become costly if you’re not careful.
Well like I said I’m only guessing that the server may be on the webhost and the storage in the cloud., Otherwise as you mentioned starage will get expensive.
Its definitely a web host, not Google, and definitely unlimited space and bandwidth. The fair use policy does say that bandwidth will be limited to 25gb/month for file sharing sites, but I’m not sure that Plex would be considered as such if I’m the only subscriber.
However, it seems the fair use policy might get me another way… site content must be web facing and the hosting cannot be used as an offsite backup facility.
Ah well, it was worth the looking into.
Based on your replies, it seems that unlimited space with a web host is unusual. Real shame mine don’t have a referral program. They are ecowebhosting.co.uk if it’s any use to you.
