I’m wondering if there is a way to have Plex transcode video, but NOT the audio of a movie. The situation is I would like to play some of my movies at a remote location, which will require transcoding the video to lower the bandwidth requirement, but I want to keep the multichannel audio as I have a multichannel audio system at that location. Is there a way to do that? I use the most current Plex app for Android TV at that location specifically.
You cannot influence how Plex will transcode your media if the original media isn’t supported or bandwidth/bitrate restrictions apply. From what I’ve seen, a transcode due to lack of support for the video format does not cause a supported audio track to be transcoded. Though in many cases where the transcode is triggered due to quality settings / restrictions, this will also adjust the audio format.
Thanks for your reply. I don’t know if that matches what I’m seeing though. I’m choosing to transcode the media by selecting a lower bit rate for playback when streaming remotely. It’s not happening automatically, I’m choosing what bitrate to apply to the stream. When I do that, the audio seems to strip back to the 2ch stereo track or a transcoded 2ch stereo mix, rather than keeping the multichannel audio channel intact whether that be the ATMOS track, 7.1 track or 5.1 track. So that’s where my question lies…as again, I’d like to keep the multichannel audio track intact, but just transcode the video to lower the bandwidth requirements when streaming remotely.
Ok, so after some experimenting, I do see the option to set the video and audio streams independently in the Windows App and Android TV apps. But when playing I see it’s transcoding to “OPUS”. Will that process keep the multichannel format intact just using the OPUS codec?
