Is Music management on life support?

Sorry for the blunt question but having recently tried Plex music side (I love the rest so much) and noticing that even simple things are buggy, I checked the forums and I didn’t even find a music related tag so I would like to know if reporting is useful or the team has more pressing issues (totally understandable)?

I don’t know if there’s a market for music buffs but I’ve tested lots of sw recently and the fact that “iTunes” is the least bad is not comforting

Very much alive.
You might want to check out Plexamp for the purpose of “music buffing”

Plexamp very much (I rediscovered it, so cool). I should post in Plexamp even server related issues?

if it’s server based, it’s probably better to post in library-management

Due to the existence of Plexamp and its frequent updates I don’t doubt that music has a future on Plex.

But as you have noticed some music management issues are flaky and there are longstanding important feature requests (like supporting the Composer tag) which have never been addressed.

Keep reporting issues, but don’t expect quick changes.

thank you!
As an aside, did you find remedies to workaround issues?

My main lib is in iTunes (and I’m sure Plex worked better with ut in the past but I hadn’t much use) but even a new small “Christmas” library is already a mess (VA not interpreted as such despite being in the right folders, even multi-disk numbering works only sometimes).

In my experience problems with scrambled artist names always derive from some file organization/tagging error. And I think that error can even be with a different artist than what you see misbehaving. Use a tool like mp3tag, and double check everything. I suspect that even one messed up file can cause the carnage you are seeing.

You also cannot have loose singles, Plex requires everything to be in an album. If you have a folder of singles, the least bad option seems to be making a fake album, with Album Artist being “Various Artists”.

If you are positive that your files are all correct, I would delete the music library entirely, then recreate it and add the files back in small groups. Turn off Sonic Analysis and all the extra metadata lookups so basic library building goes quickly. Once everything seems to be working, you can turn all the extra library goodies back on and let it cook.

I had the scrambled artists problem too. Once I got every file compliant, and figured out a routine for adding new music which followed all the rules, I have not had any more trouble. (mp3tag makes it very easy to process new files and guarantee they have correct tags, names, folder structure. It takes some time to learn, but it is worth it.)

It sucks that Plex is so delicate when it comes to music, and so inflexible with not allowing loose singles, and bad for stuff like collections of DJ mixes, and unable to manage classical music at all… But… It is what it is.

FYI HERE is some discussion on dealing with singles.

:joy: they only other reason I’d use Plex for music, Beatport app being dead.

thank you. Lots of interesting infos.
