Is Plex down again?

Hi. I came here looking for a post like yours because my Plex is acting strange weekly, daily even, the past 2 weeks or so. Slow loading even when it works, I have to restart it almost daily now and what finally got me here tonight? My main acct wasn’t logged in. Only my 2ndary one and no other friends or family visible to choose when usually there is 7 accts visible to choose from. I finally got my main one logged in but still no other users show at landing page. I gotta say I have been aggravated with Plex lately. I also think all these extras like Live TV are part of the problems. Here is my request… that you have the live TV, all the extras really, as part of a separate download for those who want it. I bought this for my home content and I want a more simplistic Server, one that works well like it has for most of the past 8 years or so. With each add-on, like DVR, Live TV, etc., it seems to have more issues with each addition and happens more frequently. I didn’t sign up for these extras and don’t want them personally. Please make a simple edition without add-ons and a separate one for those who want these things. Kinda like you do with Plex-Amp. I love Plex-Amp btw, and it is a separate Download. My PMS ran issue free for years, but since add-ons, it gets more and more troublesome. Sometimes it tells me “Secure Connections” nonsense when I am on my own home network. I have to restart it and hope it fixes the brain-fart. it never used to do that until 6-8 weeks ago and nothing changed in my network configuration so I think its these add-ons. I love Plex so don’t take this as flaming you. I just think for those who want our PMS to be used for what we originally purchased it for, it would be a nice option as a more streamlined version of its original intention. Thanks much

If you don’t mind creating a new thread , telling me the details about which version works and where it started, then showing me in your logs where you can recreate or capture it, I will do everything I can.

Please do understand I’m a Linux guy. I understand Mac because it’s Unix and I grew up in Unix. Windows is foreign but logs are mostly logs. I just won’t know much about how to resolve.

Infrastructure - networking - I can help with.

I like the idea of a light Plex but unfortunately I would expect requests would not stop there. Chuck is right a new post would be best, there are many clever Forum members willing to help out.

Yes, it’s very ironic that they removed plugins, yet add things like LiveTV, which I can’t use because I have an HD-PVR which worked perfectly fine with the NextPVR plugin, but doesn’t work with their LiveTV they have now. Removing plugins was the start of the downfall for PLEX.

So… Now that things are back up and running I have created a managed user called “offline user”. Does this protect me from losing access if this happens again in the future? Will I be able to switch to that user and play my library via players on my local network?

Server Security: Preferred, not Required or Disabled.
All Clients: Fallback to insecure on local network only.

Plexweb will still be dead in the water. Plexweb and the big 3 Desktop Players Apps won’t work during an outage.

Your devices will be able to connect locally and work fine during an outage.

Hmmm odd. I have my settings configured that way and local clients did not work last night. They work when my ISP goes offline, but not last night.

Hmmmm… mine worked last night.

Are you a managed user or in a Home (I’m not)?
There could be something in there to mess things up.

It does sound like it’s working if you have local when the ISP goes belly-up.

Just my main PLEX admin user. I have several Roku devices that connect to PMS. Generally when there is a network outage I have no issues. After a short delay the client fails over to offline mode and I can view/play my library. last night everything was all fetched up. No big deal, I created a managed user I’ll try next time it happens

Totally agree… I understand the remote streaming can be impacted, but there’s no excuse why the local network should be effected. Come up with a better system for the local network. Buy our software your local network is up 99% of the time. Lol

It is the latest update, 100%. This was driving me mad last week and as I was working weekend, it’s only until tonight that I know the problem. It started off as Plex ‘bouncing’ in and out of the network then mostly unavailable at all on all my devices. This was straight after the latest update however what threw me was Plex had been OK playing music but died ‘track by track’ . Anyway, got to grips with it tonight and only Plex was complaining about an insecure network so wouldn’t connect. My network settings are ‘secure preferred’ so that didn’t compute. Trying the web app made no diff, in fact nothing made any diff soooo that called for Windows System Restore… which made no diff. Soooo got the big guns out and did an image restore pre-update and everything working. Looking like the update but to confirm, I installed the latest update and I’m back in trouble. I will restore from image again but will definitely skip this update. Plex programmers please PLEASE dump this update RIGHT NOW. If our users dont have an image file to recall it could all end in tears which is very unfair. Please remedy or remove this update please ASAP. Plex is wonderful BUT please please have a ‘rollback’ or ‘undo update’ feature, it could be an OS issue but it would make life so much easier for people who dont even know what an image file is.

Absolutely, the local network should not be affected by anything at all, and absolutely not by Plex or similar software. I can access all my drives using Plex with internet access or not so whats going on…?

2 part question.

**1> can I go back to any old FW update? I prefer one from about 1 yr ago & I have read that every past “update” is on our servers in a folder.

2nd> if 1 is possible, can someone make or point me in the direction of a video of “downgrading” the Firmware, for the lack of a better word.

Thanks for any and all help

Seems to be down again…
I get these errors in my logs
HTTP 403 response from GET https://plex.tv/api/v2/server/access_tokens?auth_token=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
And my server says its unclaimed now. When I attempt to claim, it says plex is down and to check the status page. Yet, that page says its up…

I found these instructions (at Bottom in BOLD)
from Otto Kerner - Plex Ninja (Moderator) Aug '19

I want to try to rollback but not sure what a good FW Update to go back to is? Any suggestions? I would prefer an update that predates the add-ons like Podcasts, live TV, DVR, any of it really. I use none of it. Is there any way to tell which updates these were or are the upgrades dated somehow and if so, how can I match a good one that predates all those add-ons? Thanks for any help

INSTRUCTIONS for a PMServer on Windows ROLLBACK
Rolling back on Windows works as follows:

** note down your current Plex Server software version**
** 1> Stop Plex Server using its tray icon.**
** 2> uninstall Plex Server with the regular ‘Apps’ control panel of Windows. Do not use 3rd party ‘uninstaller’ software like Revo etc. Do not use Registry cleaners/optimizers.**
** 3> go to your Plex data folder 700.**
** There is a subfolder in there, named Updates which will contain previous versions of the installer .exe**
** 4> execute the installer for the previous software version**
** 5> reboot Windows (just a safety measure, it may work without rebooting as well)**

BTW Plex-Admin… if you make a Plex “Light” without add-ons like LiveTV and similar in the future, please let me know as I will not be updating PMS until and if, there ever is a “Light” Version that just works as a home server & not a Jack-of-all. Thanks

This was a reply to Otto on that post after using this method as I’m sure people are worried they could screw up their PMS worse but apparently, if you follow the directions step by step, you should have no worries. Cheers

“I did that and didn’t loose any settings.
The playback has been as good as ever on the old version.
I hope that by the time I come back from holiday there will be an update that doesn’t have the problem. Thanks for your assistance.”
