Is plex spying on us

Guys,

I’ve installed a cisco ASA Firewall, and noticed that plex seems to make multiple connections out to the internet, Amazon to be exact?

If i block internet access so it cant dial out, a lot of media stops playing.

Why is plex dialing home?

Plex.tv is hosted on through Amazon Web Services (AWS). So, yes it is Plex dialing home. Plex dials home for a few reasons.

  • get remote access information
  • check for Plex Pass, sharing, and other account related data
  • anonymous usage data (you can opt out if you haven’t)
  • gathering new codecs when needed

Blocking access should not stop local playback, but would impact remote playback. Plex does not gather any information on your actual media.
