Is Subtitle Search working?

Is Subtitle Search working?
I can find it on OpenSubtitles.org, and with the VLC extension (which searches opensubtitles.org), but PMS returns nothing found, even if I only search the series name.

Depending on what your language settings are and what subtitles you ask Plex to search for you may not get a lot of results

Do you get no results for anything, EVER? Or you just aren’t getting results for things you think should have a selection sometimes?

I’m unclear on how a VLC extension applies to this

Go to this page and open Audio & Subtitle Settings
https://app.plex.tv/desktop/#!/settings/account

The two selections on the bottom is what tells Plex to search for on opensubtitles

If you have only show SDH and only show forced subtitles you will get NO RESULTS for almost everything you look for

Honestly, I’m not a fan of the selection they have because I only need forced subtitles for foreign parts only. Generally, I burn those directly into the video but occasionally I run in to something I missed and opensubtitles.org never seems to have it

I have resorted to downloading most of my subs from subscene.com and placing them inside the folder with the video, burning them in, or embedding them with a program like MKVtoolNix

If you never get any results for anything turn off your VPN on the server machine if you have one
My VPN doesn’t interfere with anything else Plex related but it seems to block the subtitle search

I have the same setting as you showed in the red box.

VLC has an extension, and like Plex, searches opensubtitles.org.
Using the same search terms, and language on the opensubtitles.org site, or in the VLC search, I get results, but in Plex, I get no results.

Here’s my results from VLC and from PLEX
(I d/l’s using VLC and added the srt’s to my server)

When searching for the subs for an episode you need to put in the season/episode notation

Generally, my sub searches work but with preferred non-SDH and prefer forced I’m not getting any results for that show either

You put S01e08, but the season for Twin Peaks the Return in the subtitles found is s03, as shown is the results, but Twin Peaks The Return is a special case, as The Return could be seen as a S1.

But, looked at some missing subtitles at random, and for
The X-Files s01e02 (Deep Throat), Plex does not show the
subtitles, but searching opensubtitles with VLC, it is found.

You’re right @Tony_T

I missed that, I was looking at S03e08 and 09 and I get nothing.
I do get a lot of results for s01e08 though

Odd looks like the the is causing issues. Thanks for the examples. I’ll make a bug report. The whole thing likely needs to be gone over for oddities.

Also getting No Results when I search with the IMDB#
https://support.plex.tv/articles/201018497-fix-match-match/
For example, when I enter imdb-tt0424230, I get No Results,
Here’s the IMDB page: Late Night with Conan O'Brien: 10th Anniversary Special (TV Special 2003) - IMDb

Put it in a movie library, not TV

edit:

I just realized if you want it in a TV library with the rest of the show you can add it as a special in a Season 00 folder

IMDB is only for movies libraries, it will not work in TV libraries. Need to use the TVDB or TMDB for TV libraries

Searching with tvdb-213658 also fails, as does with the name (Late Night with Conan O’Brien: 10th Anniversary Special)
https://thetvdb.com/search?query=Late+Night+with+Conan+O’Brien%3A+10th+Anniversary+Special+

if you are using a MOVIE library you can use IMDB or TMDB

If you are using a TV library you can use TVDB or TMDB for TV shows

Though TVDB has them now, we do not search TVDB for movies. That link it is classified as movie with a movie ID rather than a series ID

Everything in a TV library needs to be treated as a continuing series with a season and episode number format (or date based) even if it is only a single episode. TV Shows specials would be in the specials season ( Season 00) as S00E11 in this case for the main show, if you want it in a TV library.

If you want it in a tv library

Late Night with Conan O’Brien (1993) <–Show folder
Season 00 <–Season folder
Late Night with Conan O`Brien - s00e11 - 10th Anniversary Special.mkv <–Episode name

If you want it in a movie library

Late Night with Conan O’Brien: 10th Anniversary Special (2003) {imdb-tt0424230}.mkv

@BigWheel, that clears it up, thanks.
I have it as s01e01, which is technically incorrect, and I see now that is what causes the matching to use his 1st show as a match, but as it’s the only Conan show I have in Plex, and I don’t want to have it in Movies, I’ll just manually add the info and poster.

(Odd that TBDB has it classified as a Movie)

Not s01e01

You want s00e11

Technically, yes, but I only have that one DVD and that would give me a series with Zero Episodes and One Special, so I used s01e01 for the 10th Anniversary Special, and s00e01, s00e02, etc for the DVD extra’s I just manually entered the info.
(I see now that this naming is incorrect, but it works for me)

Thanks for this…
I have a few Bluray TV Shows that needed subtitles and searching OpenSubtitles (within Plex) was tedious and out of sync. I now have a py script that can fix the offsets, but downloading on the opensubtitles website was even more tedious, as there wasn’t any complete seasons.

subscene.com had Complete Seasons for the few Blu-ray rips shows I needed (most of my TV shows are DVD and have the embedded MOV_TEXT}.
