Is the metadata for my libary(s) stored on servers at plex.tv?

I’m wondering if the metadata for the entries in my library(s) are stored outside of my own plex server? I run Plex server on Linux and have a concern about the privacy of that metadata. If it is, I will likely have follow-on questions about what is done with it, how it’s maintained, etc.

Thanks in advance

No. Your data is stored locally.

@Elijah_Baley Thanks for the clarification. Maybe you can shed light on something else… I remember, from a while ago, that the PMS must be connected to the internet in order to play something to one of my clients, even though they are both on the same local network… 1) is this true? 2) why is that?

Thanks again

That is actually not true and never was.

The only internet requirement for playback is if you are using the “Home” functions. I do not use “Home” so my Plex works fine with or without internet. I do use multiple users but I do it the “old” way and therefore when the internet goes down I can use Plex just fine. Of course when the internet is down I cannot switch users.

Thanks again… I use the Home feature so that must have been what I was thinking.

Actually, some clients (the Xbox client comes to mind) are restricted by their platform, so they cannot find the server on their own, even if they are in the same local network as the server. For these clients, the connection to plex.tv is necessary. Otherwise they had no chance of finding the server.
The Smart TV app or the ChromeCast app are even loaded directly from plex servers. They don’t work without internet connection either.
