I find it rather odd, that a relatively expensive combination Nvidia Shield Pro and Plex Lifetime pass is so badly supported at its core when using mainly for server purposes.
Why? We’ll, previously the server app would randomly crash every month or so and probably corrupt the database (to my best knowledge), since I couldn’t connect to it anymore. The easiest way to fix this was just to re-install the server app on Nvidia Shield and re-index everything.
This was annoying but I’ve not had such a crash for months, until I left for holiday this Christmas and had to unpower my Shield Plex Server. And lo behold, the server couldn’t be reached anymore when I powered it back on. Trying to reclaim the server via Shield using PC and accessing it locally was a failure (browsing to local.ip:32400/web and trying to sign in). Every other guide for database recovery is so lengthy that I prefer to just re-install and rescan. A fresh server, a fresh start.
What I don’t understand is, why is the Plex media server an app that only installs and runs on Shield but there’s no actual UI or possibility to reclaim the server or fix it easily. The actual player app feels far more robust. In fact, the server app is so well hidden that I have to access its information via Google Play store after installation.
Also, I really don’t understand what I’m doing wrong when shutting down the server/shield so that it just corrupts and dies time after time.
I’m using an external drive to store my media, not Shield’s internal media.
I would like to keep using the plex but this kind of problematic behaviour downgrades the “plug and play” usability I’m looking for with streaming and media services.
Cheers.
