Is there a way to “force” Direct Play/Direct Stream as the main/default option for shared users?

There’s no such option for the server admin. You can set restrictions for remote streaming but those aim at limiting the bandwidth per user and concurrent streams per user.
Keep in mind not all clients will be able to stream all media in original quality…

There’s a popular feature suggestion to allow admins to force max/original quality for all/certain users.

Default All Clients to Max Internet Streaming

My server keeps getting bogged down transcoding for no reason because clients have a low default setting for internet streaming. They are all capable of streaming original quality, and since I’ve been converting a lot of my files to x265, the transcoded 720p version ends up having a higher bitrate than the original does in 1080 or 4k. Please please please allow the server to choose to default the client bandwidth setting to original by default and save my poor server.
