Is there any way to enable square cover art or does the PMS lack this capability? A hidden config setting somewhere, perhaps?
I have most of my TV shows tagged with square cover art (rather than the typical vertical posters) because I prefer the way it looks on my TV. Even though I have the PMS set to look at local media assets first, Plex HT, the Plex, and PlexConnect don’t display the square cover art.
Both Subler and iFlicks 2 allow you to tag TV shows with square cover art (like what the iTunes Store uses for the TV shows it sells). You can also get square cover art for TV shows from iTunes Artwork Finder and Squared TV Art.
For example:
So if you have the art and go in to edit the poster - choose the square one you have - are you saying it doesn't stick?

Well, in the media manager, the square art doesn't appear even though it's embedded in the MP4. I'm not sure how I can choose a separate image file because the media manager doesn't allow me to add an image file; it only offers the option of entering a URL which isn't helpful in this case. I also added the square cover art as "poster.jpg" in the TV show's folder but the PMS ignores this one as well, even though the Plex wiki says that should work.
I was referring to poster - choose an image (for you it would be the poster.jpg) - that will embed the image in the bundle for that piece of media or season / show - whichever.
Not sure why the poster.jpg isn't working. Your agents are in the correct order? Local Media Assets are set to be first? I've never used that method but it should respect the order of the agents as far as I know.

Local Media Assets are set first. In the Plex Media Manager on my Mac, I don't have the "choose an image option" but on my iPad I do. On the Mac, I only have the option to enter a URL. I uploaded the poster to my iPad and added it from there. It appears and is selectable but is ignored; Plex still displays only the vertical poster.
Actually, I’m wrong. Plex does display the square cover art but it crops/resizes it to fit in the vertical poster placeholder.
The Media Manager is all web based now, so use PlexWeb. If you are still using the old Media Manger on your Mac, your version of PMS is very outdated.
You should see something like this:

But you are correct, I just tested this and it is cropping to fit the rectangle. I will open a bug for it.
I am using the latest PMS. I see the exact same thing as in your screenshot, except the "choose an image" and "drag and drop" options are missing on Safari on OS X 10.6.8, but they do appear on Safari on iOS. Perhaps it's another bug.The Media Manager is all web based now, so use PlexWeb. If you are still using the old Media Manger on your Mac, your version of PMS is very outdated.

The Plex/Web problem of it not displaying all the poster options seems to be a Safari glitch. I tried Chrome and all the buttons are there. I reported graphic glitches with Safari and Plex/Web on OS X 10.6.8 back in February but never got a response from the dev. Obviously some issues still exist.

Thank you.
Just bumping this thread to see if and when support for iTunes-style square poster are will be added to Plex.
I would like to see this feature implemented as well. Much prefer the square cover arts for TV shows.
Any update on the square artwork for TV shows?
I am new to Plex and as I am adding files to my server, I have run into the same issue. I have almost all of my TV shows tagged using iTunes’ own square cover art, but Plex crops this in the media server. I have my local media files agent set at the top, so it will show said artwork, but cropped. This is unfortunate as I go through the pains to make sure my items are tagged properly and most fanart does not satisfy my tastes (although many are well done, I still prefer to us the “official” ones).
At this point, I honestly think that the Plex devs don’t give a ■■■■ about square poster art and will never add support for it. But I’d love to be proven wrong.
As of Nov 2018, the issue is still here. I got dozens of squared cover arts for my TVShows and in the different UIs it all look like sh##.
I’m quite new to Plex, and I really though it was a well made thing, but sadly it is not
Just chiming in here that this would be a welcomed addition
