I know you can set the sort order per tv series at the root level (based off of tvdb), but my problem is that occasionally (especially with cartoons), show’s will air in different order depending on region. This isn’t a problem is everything is available from a single region, but in my case it isn’t.
I’ve done PAINFUL conversions of entire seasons to get content to show up correctly in plex but converting files one by one, but my problem would disappear completely if Plex allowed some way for me to just set the episode ordering at a SEASON level.
Any suggestions or workarounds would be massively appreciated
For TV series, Plex uses episode ordering from TMDB and TVDB. If an appropriate alternate ordering exists at TVDB, you can select it by editing the show.
Edit the show (pencil icon) → Advanced → Episode Ordering
If that does not work for your show, you might be able to create a new ordering at TVDB, as they allow users to edit info on their system. You should clear it with their admins first. Otherwise, they will delete your edits/additions if they disagree with them (Personal experience: They’re pretty reasonable. They’ve changed some things I’ve requested and rejected others).
If your file names contain the episode titles, but not the season or episode numbers, you should be able to use a tool like Filebot to rename your files and assign them season and episode numbers of one of the supported episode orderings.
Thanks for the suggestion, but unfortunately the problem isn’t the ordering, it’s the fact that Plex only allows setting the order at the series level. For example, season 1 might be airing order, but season 2 would be US airing order.
Currently (that I know of), there is no way for me to set season 1 to a different episode ordering than season 2.
All files are all correctly tagged and properly scanned by plex.
Actually, if the episodes were straight 1 to 1 to files, I could just rename the files to a specific airing order from tvdb, but unfortunately many of the seasons have 2 episodes tied to 1 file, and as such this doesn’t work.
If there is no ordering available which has these 2 episodes per file in it, I think it is best to split the files themselves. Even though it can be a drag if there are many episodes affected.
Heh, I think I’m not describing my problem very clearly
There is an ordering available for those files, but the problem is that the seasons that are available are all from multiple regions, and I can’t find a single region source for these cartoons.
Ie. Paw Patrol has multiple ordering on TVDB : Aired order, US aired order, production order, etc.
Season 1 : Only available in US aired order
Season 2: Only available in US Aired order
Season 3: Only available in Aired order
Season 4: only available in Production order.
While I can set the Paw Patrol to US Aired order, which would make Season 1 and 2 be correct, it makes Season 3 and 4 show up incorrectly and have episode mismatches.
You cannot use different orderings for each season.
Adapt the file names of your season 3 and 4 episodes, so they fit the chosen ordering of the other seasons.
Yeah, thats my general process right now, but because of the said above 2 episode per file, cutting up 25 files is painnnnful. And that’s only 1 series, this is happening to 4 other series, which makes it ton of work whenever a season drops.
This could be all fixed if plex just allowed me to somehow set a tv ordering at the season level
That’s a potential source of big trouble. It would be bery difficult to implement it in a way that is not confusing users. Because different orderings can not only affect episode numbers, but can also move a particular episode into a different season.
If your files already contain chapter markers at the episode boundary, you can use that as the point to snip the files apart.
