Is this for real?

Hi, I am without internet connection. Tried to login into my Plex App, using a Samsung 2022 TV, and I am getting a “Check your internet connection…” dead end. Is this happening? Is there a way yo bypass this? Server is literally running 1 meter away from the telly, connected by UTP.

Hi, I can still connect to my local plex server using my roku with no Internet service. Should this change in future versions, I won´t be using plex anymore. This is really a game changer.

Good luck!

I believe most smart tv apps are web based apps which is to say they do not load without an interent connection RE: Samsung TV

Yup this is a real thing. You can set up your server/system to work without internet. Cwallace posted the correct thread to do this.

In a pinch, what you can do is use your mobile phone if you can to set up a hotspot. Then have your TV/Plex app device join the hotspot, let the Plexapp/TV do its thing to get passed the “check your internet” situation. Once you are in the Plex app you can cut the hotspot and it will work just fine.

It only needs internet to do a check, once the check is done it operates like normal/what you would expect. Not ideal, but, it is a way to get up and running.

Thanks Ryuzaki 2… As you mentioned, not an ideal solution but at least you can make it work, unless you are in the middle of nothing without even mobile phone signal.

Hi, thanks all for the replies.
OK, I’ve asked for a “bypass” way, and this certainly applies. Awkwardly, in my current situation I have limited or no mobile coverage. So, I guess I am stuck until the intenet service is back. As @julianva mentioned above, this does not apply in all scenarios. Mine for instance. I also have a Roku and a 10y old Samsung TV with and old app in it, and both let me connect, but not the newest TV. It is just frustrating.

I started my homelab journey with Plex several years ago, and I have found the very same pattern applying to lots of folks. I have enjoyed Plex for so many years, I am grateful for it, I really am. But, (there is always a “but”) lately I find it drifting away (away from us at least), becoming something else. I understand it needs to evolve, it has people in the payroll, and it needs an economic model and probably a different approach to follow in order to survive. And all this felling of Plex fading away from homelabers is probably a consequence of this. It makes me feel sad for a project I used, and yet still, love so much.

After reading this discussion, it has come to mind after some good normal solutions. HDMI connection, if your server is so close to your TV, a direct Tv link to your files in a outage, would that be a solution for you.

Hi @SE56 yes, that could be another way to handle this. Unfortunately mine is a headless server.

Nevertheless I think this is a very basic feature it should be natively implemented in all apps. I’ve read on the explanations, yet my opinion stands the same. People hosting their own media should not depend on external connectivity at all.

Yesterday late night Internet finally got back after more than one week outage. (the Festivus Miracle!) Finally I could login and enjoy Plex from the telly again.

The lesson has been learned. For me, this represent a pivot point. Thanks everyone and have a nice holiday season.
