ISP Data usage while watching video at home

Hello,

I would like to get a response from Plex Support on behalf of this concern that I have. Other response are welcome but I want to get the direct information from the provider of Plex. I respect everyone’s knowledge, if you know 100% that you are correct that please provide the answer.

I have read multiple threads about this and I have tried a few methods that were provided. It seems as though it does not work as some post have said.

I ultimately want to be 100% sure that while I watch a video from my plex server from my phone, TV, fire stick tv and tablets while connecting to only the wifi in my house that it is NOT using any of my data cap that I have with Xfinity. My daughter watches multiple moves and shows a day and I want to ensure that I am not killing my data cap.

I attempt to try a method that someone posted in one of the threads that you go under server settings in PMS and then network the secure connections. Instead of having required, I was suggest to change to disable. I unplugged my route from the modem and I tested on all devices. No connection to my PMS at all. So it makes me wonder, is all my streaming leaving my network and then coming back??

I appreciate all information and thank you in advance for your time.

Why don’t you just disable remote access to your Plex server? Settings -> Remote Access -> Disable. That way you are ensured that you won’t have movie traffic on the WAN side.

But networking wise, no reason that traffic would leave your home network, with the exception if you are running a VPN. Your WAN connection is the gateway of last resort, all local traffic will stay on the LAN and anything that isn’t local traffic will go out to the web.

You will have some “Plex” Internet traffic even when not playing movies, such as metafile updates, Plex server updates, etc.

Good alternative option. I can use that until we need to use it outside of the house but with that option, I can only enable it again by going into the plex server itself correct?

I figured it didnt have a reason too but wanted to make sure. I only use a VPN on a gaming pc that doesn’t have the pms on it. The pc that has pms is windows server 2012 and strictly only running pms. I think I may have given an statis ip but thats all.

My router is an airport extreme and I have an airport express placed on the other side of the house. I have not check subnets but the airport express is only set to extend the network thats all.

Make sense to have some plex internet traffic for metafile updates and all.
