ISP just data capped me, looking for alternatives for a remote PMS

My ISP (C0X) just announced a data cap of 1TB/month and I have been nearly doubling that for years. Now I’m not sure what I’m going to do. I’m open to other options but I’m thinking my only option to keep 20+ users happy is to move my PMS to a remote location. Is anyone using an AWS style server to host their plex server?

I’m new to this whole “off site server” stuff, so please forgive me if I’m using the wrong terminology.

Gonna cost you a lot for offsite hosting. Gonna cost you a lot for the overages from COX (10 bucks for ever 50 gigs). Best solution, cut your users, choose a handful. See if Fiber (Gigablast) from Cox is available in your neighborhood otherwise just hope for that. 80 bucks for gig with (2tb cap) even though they do not cap it because you login to your account and it says this line does not need monitoring.

No Gigablast available in my neighborhood (they are only running fiber to the new neighborhoods) and C0X said they don’t have any plans of running fiber to mine. I don’t have any other viable ISP options. I considered shutting the server down (or just cutting most of the users off) but I’d hate to do that.

Since you are using C0X (LOL noticed the actual spelling gets bleeped out), take a look at there home business packages, the home business plans cost a little more, but offer unlimited bandwidth. I switched from residential to home business years ago and haven’t looked back.

Interesting, I’ll have to look into that. What are you paying and what speeds are you getting?

I called them today, the cost was going to be $319/month for the exact same plan that I have currently (300/30) which I’m only paying $99 for.

true, with a 1TB bandwidth cap. You will have to figure out what you want, speed or bandwidth. I pay $99 for a 50/10. As that speed is fast enough for my needs. I myself like not having to worry about the bandwidth.

Do any of the 20 people you share with have Fiber internet without a data cap?

If so move your box to their house

Why do you need to share with 20 people?

Another option for you is to COLO your server in a datacenter.
Depending on the size of your box prices start out at $50 a month at places like https://joesdatacenter.com/colocation/

The articles I read about this stated C0x would be adding a option to pay for unlimited data however they haven’t announced pricing yet. With Comcast I’m getting roughly 300/30 for $110 a month with unlimited data. I feel thats fairly reasonable given the speeds I’m getting.

I also feel these forums should allow people to use proper business names…C0x is a big company yet they’re blocking it as if people are using the spelling for a male rooster.

Hthighway, that is a great idea, thanks for your input.

Codeecb, do you have a link for that article? I would gladly pay a little more for unlimited data, I feel it’s reasonable for them to ask their users to pay more if they are draining the neighborhood’s bandwidth. I don’t however, feel it’s reasonable to issue a data cap on users when they don’t have another option For the 2% to run to.

This is from their site

I think you will just have to wait a few months for Cox to announce the unlimited option. Most likey this will be 50 bucks added on to ur current plan. Pay to play in other words if you do not want to cut people. In the mean time though you will probably have to cut some people or pay for the overages.

This.
