Hi,
I wonder if anyone can help me, I store all my movie media on a home server and give access to a few friends and family over the internet. Lately my internet connection has been terrible as they have had a lot of problems with the internet connection in the area. I want to move my media to a remote location and don’t know what the best option is, are there any recommendations for remote storage options that has good internet speed at and affordable price and large storage??
Many thanks
Your biggest issue in this ashlee is going to be getting your data onto a remote service (dependent on how much media you have) and what your upload speed is to the server
I have about 4tb of hard drive, but I was thinking a remote server with plex media installed with the hard drive space, I understand that it will take time to upload all the content but wondered if anybody new any companies that supply this kind of service??
Thanks
Have a look at So you start! They are a branh off of OVH and I have been using their £25 PCM servers for over 1 year. They are backed by OVH also. Would recommend! https://www.soyoustart.com/en/essential-servers/
Cheers m8 I will take a look
In addition to the service dextros mentioned, check out Linode or Digital Ocean. They offer good pricing for basic Linux VMs. Their storage costs are a bit pricey though, so if you’re using nearly all 4TB of that disk space then it may be too costly.
The remote servers and seedboxes would be great to have but pricing is the reason I am unable to change over. I have at least 5TB of data and growing. There is no way I can afford $100+ a month on a non-necessity that others aren’t willing to contribute towards.

Exactly. Plex isn’t targeted towards this usage scenario anyway. Someone doing this would have to charge for access to make the financials work, which puts one squarely in violation of the Plex TOS.
Plex is for accessing YOUR media on YOUR hardware.

There are seedboxes and servers available for rental that already have Plex installled. I never thought about the TOS being an issue. The pre-Plex server setups suck though because they already have default Libraries that you are unable to modify. Just too much to worry about. I just need Comcast to get rid of (or increase) their damn data cap because this 5MB max upload of DSL is horrible.

Move to KC and get Google Fiber
B-)
You may be able to move your existing server to a friend’s house? Or to your place of employment? Mother’s? Cousins?
The problem is, moving the server out of your physical control means you are also moving the problem from your friends accessing the server, to you accessing the server yourself. If they are having issues with it local to you, you are likely to have issues by remotely accessing it…
Something to think about, anyway…

Thanks! Think my contract with U-verse is over in November. I just left Comcast and will be going back if I don’t see bad reviews about the cap increase
