Issue with direct playing HDR 4k videos on Plex Media Player Win10

Hi all,

I’m having a weird issue with the quality of 4k HEVC videos on Plex Media Player (latest PlexPass version). I can’t describe it, but the colors look very off (like ultra contrasty). However if I open up VLC and play the same exact files it looks perfect.

I’ve tried enabling and disabling hardware acceleration but that’s not working. I’m using a GTX 1060 6gb with a Ryzen 5 1600 processor. HDR is enabled in Windows

Any ideas on where to start troubleshooting this issue? For awhile I’ve just been loading all 4K content in VLC.

Thanks!

No troubleshooting needed, Plex Media Player does not support HDR playback. Plex keeps giving BS excuses much like they did back when people wanted DTS-HD support. It’s Apple or Microsoft’s fault, there isn’t a large demand yada yada. Eventually HDR support will get added but I wouldn’t hold my breath while waiting. At the moment if you want to use Plex and have it correctly display HDR content on Windows you need to setup Kodi with MadVR and the Plex for Kodi plugin. It’s kind of buggy, crashes a lot and the official Plex for Kodi plugin currently cannot resume playback other than that it has a great picture.

Yeah it sucks PMP doesn’t support HDR, I resorted to using a Nvidia Shield to use plex to play my 4k HDR content.

I really hope they add support to windows sooner rather than later

I would really love to know how or why Plex manages to be so inept in dealing with customers who use the PMP client. For about a year now they have been going on about how HDR can’t be implemented in Windows because MPV doesn’t support it and beside Apple doesn’t support HDR so it wouldn’t be fair or something like that. When you point out that MPV’s website has right on the front page “supports HDR” you get rebuffed that it must simply be their marketing department it’s really not supported. But now the Plex marketing department is sending out messages about how the iOS client is switching to MPV which will allow it to have HDR playback. WTF!!! This is so frustrating, stupid me thought for some reason my computer, that cost several thousands of dollars should be able to out perform some POS disposable streaming toy. Kodi with MadVR proves this is possible so why won’t Plex help me realize the full potential of my system. I would love to know what it would take to get something a step up from this ho hum wishy washy lukewarm Milwaukee’s Best of a client they keep serving. I live in Wisconsin I can send better beer if that’s what it will take. It’s also starting to cool off a little outside so in a week or two I am probably going to be relying heavily on Plex until about April or May.

Would be fine if they would just let me choose a 3rd party player like VLC for PMP since it’s often on the same HTPC over local streaming

@CineBaugh how can you tell that Windows 10 PMP is actually not able to handle HDR? I would also like to test if HDR is properly handled but how can you do this? When you enable HDR in Windows 10 it is just enabled … it does not “disable” itself when playing movie through PMP - when movie is played, TV still shows me that HDR signal is received and active. Do you have some video clips samples where I could easily distinguish weather HDR is handled and processed or not?
