Nope, only way to use Plex and playback HDR content correctly is using Kodi with MadVR and the Plex for Kodi plugin. Kind of ironic while Plex is pulling plugin support in their clients the only way to correctly view content from Plex on Windows 10 is through using a plugin in a different player. To be honest its a pain in the butt to set up, it often crashes and last I checked resuming playback where you left off is broken and doesn’t work. Either way the Plex desktop client landscape is a mess and Plex should be embarrassed for forcing nothing but bad options on their Windows customers.
So setting up a small Kodi system with DSPlayer just for my 4K library seems like the simplest option. Fortunately, I’ve lots of experience with that, thanks.
Yeah but just be aware that the Plex for Kodi add-on hasn’t been updated for a very long time.
As a side note the Windows store Plex app has (although never confirmed) seemingly been totally abandoned.
By the Win32 program, I’m guessing you mean Plex Media Player (PMP). That is still heavily developed.
Sadly though things like HDR do not seems t be high on the priority list. Odd really, as it’s regarded as their “flagship” player.
Right now the only hassle free way to watch HDR is on a Shield if HD Audio is important.
Or on an Apple TV 4K or Smart TV if HD Audio isn’t important.
A sad state of affairs really.
Yeah, thanks, my Nvidia Shield arrives on Friday
Yeah I cant say I blame you.
Its my least favourite Plex device UI/UX wise. But other than that it just works without issue.
Personally I get around the appearance by using MrMC and/or as a flinging device from my mobile. It’s Chromecast on steroids built in.
What’s MrMC?
It’s a 3rd party client that runs on tvOS and Android.
Their Ariana skin is clean and neat.
Their other skins…meh!! Although there is a plugin for Plex for Kodi.
And it supports 4k HDR playback?
Try using Edge, it supports 4K HDR on Netflix and Plex too I think last time I tried. Also XBOX One S and X supports HDR in Plex.
What is “Edge”, does passthrough audio tracks of all types?
Edge, the new internet explorer.
Thanks, this is for my HTPC, I’m not messing around with Edge
Yes It supports HDR as does Plex for Kodi.
It’s definitely worth taking a look at both.
Personally I use a combination of the above along with flinging via my Android tablet/mobile.
The Chromecast features of the Shield are truly superb.
I do HDR and HD audio through my Denon receiver. All three clients work flawlessly.
Thanks, I’ll keep that in mind, may just go back use it native. I’ll see how the native Plex client works
It works fine.
If you don’t mind the UI its obviously the simplest option.
Personally it’s my most hated UI…far more hated than the new UI that Plex have been pushing out to other clients.
Either way … enjoy.
Video UI seems OK, but the music library functionality really sucks :-(, I guess I may load Kodi for music
I don’t much care for it but there is also http://plexamp.com/
I figured out what I was doing wrong, after you select an artist you have to scroll down to get to the linked albums, the UI gives no hint about that
@Xhaka how can you tell that Windows 10 PMP is actually not able to handle HDR, is there any official information about this? I would also like to test if HDR is properly handled but how can you do this? When you enable HDR in Windows 10 it is just enabled … it does not “disable” itself when playing movie through PMP. Do you have some video clips samples where I could easily distinguish weather HDR is handled and processed or not?
