I’ve looked many placed, but been hard to find solid information. Currently at home, i just upgraded my receiver from a 4k one to a 4k HDR one. Confimed via Windows 10 that i CAN turn on HDR mode. However, watching things via Plex Media Player seems washed out. With or without HDR on, it doesn’t match the quality of playing directly via my SOny TV.
Does Plex support 4k HDR content in any form?
Reason i am doing this is because via PC, i get the receiver’s full functionality, ie. trueHD etc… etc… however, when i do it via Sony that unfortunately is missing. Also if the video is too large, even with my gigabit connection, it hiccups (without transcoding)
Any advise would be appreciated. IF for example Plex apps, both media player nad the new windows one can’t do 4k HDR, then i have no reason to keep that receiver and can return it.
Plex does not support HDR passthrough on Windows.
The only way on Windows is using Kodi(the DSPlayer version) with PFK(Plex for Kodi) or PKC(PlexKodiConnect) instead.
Hey Rosystain, thanks again for your help. Tried the Kodi Matrix, however, for some reason it doesn’t seem to have the same list of repository downloads that the normal kodi has. So no plex, and when i tried to download the plex zip manually had no success.
Lav+MadVR is totally new to me, but wondering if maybe that should be my course of action. Could use some more help and advise. Anything you can do would be appreciated.
Went with this, and the 17.6 64bit build. Everything working, only issue I’m facing is resuming movies. They always start from the beginning, any suggestions at all?? Looked everywhere with no success.
FYI, using Kodi isn’t the only way to get 4kHDR content on Windows 10. I use MPC-BE, MadVR, and LAVFilters and all HDR content plays back perfectly for me (even HDR YouTube videos).
Thanks for getting back. I bet it does work beautifully, but essentially, i want to be able to use my Plex server for content, without having to re-organize things. Ergo, why i am going the Lav Filters, MadVR, Kodi and Plex router. Yet the resume function is still problematic.
Works perfectly. I use Kodi to play and for the GUI, but plex manages the content. Took some fiddling, but it does hdr passthrough as well as bitstream all hd audio.
Firstly you have to follow the instructions very carefully form the DSPlayer website in terms of what filters are being used by Kodi and DS player. I.e. ensuring firstly it is using the DS player and not internal player.
Secondly, once running a movie you have to open the MadVR control panel (from the taskbar notification area), and enable HDR passthrough in MadVR under the display settings I believe (this is what is doing the passthrough specifically).
Once I did this it has worked. Note: I have not touched the HDR settings in windows itself (i.e. Windows is running in SDR).).
