after installing latest plex server (1.15.0.647) to my WD PR4100, WD system started to mention that there is an update available - to be clear, NOT plex itself, but WD Dashboard, the web administration of the server. The version offered is some ancient one like 0,9 something… My guess is that version number is off/wrong format in new package so the WD system consider the old version as new one and offers an update…
Some folks might accidentally downgrade I guess…
Server Version#: 1.15.0.647
Player Version#: 3.85.2
I do believe this has happened once before quite a number of months ago.
A thought. Can’t Plex upload the latest public release of the media server to WD’s servers as what WD have in their app store is very much out of date and why does Plex not push updates to WD’s servers and then let WD’s app update mechanism take care of downloading the Plex Server app directly into the NAS and then install?
My guess is that Plex does not want to go through some “validation” BS that is usually required to push app into any kind of store… From my point of view if that means that I can have the new version immediately after release, instead of waiting a month or so until someone at WD moves their ass, I am happy with manual installs… If you remember, it took them a year to fix security holes in their FW, imagine how long it takes to process less serious app update…
The issue is the version numbering style in our older packages, makes our never ones seem older than they are. We have a fix going forward, and will reach out to WD to see if we can resolve existing versions in their App Store.
I’m getting that same PR4100 upgrade notice for a ‘2013’ version of PMS.
It seems that once WD has made a sale, they have little motivation to mess with any software, including their FW, unless absolutely necessary, non-customers are clueless.
WD App Store versions are managed by WD and checks the app store and Plex production servers for any updates.
… but it looks like it’s the beta release that has triggered this version checking issue within the WD OS 3 (This is also affecting DL NASes so it’s safe to assume it’s affecting any WD NAS that operates under OS 3).
I have asked the question of why is WD’s app store still offering version 1.7.2 as an update when it should be version 1.14.5488 that WD’s app store needs to be offering.
Someone implied that no one knows who would eat the cost of WD App ‘compliance verification’ so they would accept and post an upgrade to any Apps. The same can be said about the PMS version installed on WD’s DUO HOME toaster appliance.
There is little advantage for WD to be constantly upgrading PMS for any reason, so long as the toaster version installed is still working, the end user will be oblivious.
There is no ‘profits’ for WD managing App upgrades, unless their is a serious functional or security issue and both of those issues require their self evaluation.
Plex is quite about the release of ‘PMS Version 1.15.0.647’ which seems to have only been done for a few servers so far, usually their releases seem to come out for all platforms at one time.
I think Plex has identified a version numbering issue at their end and I’ve seen a reply from WD that it is Western Digital who has taken responsibility for updating Plex for distribution to WD NASs. I think because I’ve always applied updates from Plex manually when the server announces there is an update, I’ve not seen the DL NAS I’ve got telling me that there is an update. I#'m also on the beta update channel and it would make sense for WD not to offer beta PMS releases through their own app update channels.
I understand the numbering issue, and I’m sure it’ll get straightened out.
That said I’ve never seen a list of PMS ‘current release’ (not Beta) apps from WD, is there a real APP Store to visit? No version numbers or downloads at:
That is a short coming of WD’s app store. No version numbers on the app store or the device’s own app store.
When an update is presented there is a link that can be clicked on the device’s web based dashboard where release notes are shown and it’s at that point the version offered can be seen and the choice made if to install the update or defer installation. Why WD’s version on the the WD app store is so old is a mystery .
Well, I’d say that biggest issue of WD store is that it is not maintained at all… This is actually first update of app I have seen since I bought the unit. WD proprietary package manager does not help either. In that direction, my ancient qnap ts-212 is light-years ahead… 8 years old and still receiving fw and app updates…
@John_Y128 Sorry this issue is two sided - I fixed this issue on our side last night (It now reports as PMS 1.15.0.659 in the WD Web UI) but it still conflicts with the version scheme in the WD App Store (regardless of the string being shown to you in the UI). I will be reaching out to WD to get things resolved on their side.
I will bookmark this topic and let you know when we have things resolved.
Thanks, it’s not that big of a deal, glad you guys put out the new update 1.15.0, I believe we were all struggling with some DVR Recording issues from Dec 2018’s …5488 install.
