Issues detecting NVIDIA GPU after NAS reboot (Synology DSM 7.2.2)

Server Version#: v.1.42.2.10156-f737b826c
Hi!

Until some time ago I’ve been using my Plex Server on my Synology DSM 7.2.2 with a Nvidia GPU T1000. Server has been detecting the GPU at any time and was able to transcode every movie.

Recently I’ve realize that, when I reboot my NAS, Plex server don’t detect the GPU however, if I manually stop and then start the Plex server package (without NAS reboot) then it finds the GPU automatically and all starts working again.

I have the feeling that the application starts just before that the Nvidia driver can initialize or something like that and stop looking for hardware once server is up and running.

As I said, this worked perfectly fine previously and if I restart the Plex Server application only all start working again.

Now trying the latest beta version but same behavior… I’ve a xpenology and drivers of this repo: https://github.com/pdbear/syno_nvidia_gpu_driver/releases (How-to guide).

Someone had same issue?

Thanks!!

Contact the author of those drivers for support.

The issue is that driver is not correctly tracking changes in the DSM 7.2.2 kernel

INFO:

We spoke with Synology about this issue:

  1. Synology does not support external GPU cards in any of their products
and presence of such a device in the logs voids the warranty
  2. Device failures (e.g. Power Supply) caused by overload - voids the warranty
    and customer responsibility.

Given you have a XPE implementation,

  1. I will presume you have adequate power supply, etc to drive the hardware
  2. The only point blocking you is the unofficial third-party driver for Nvidia cards.

There’s nothing we can do if driver doesn’t present the card usably through the API / ABI.

Yes, the driver does make the GPU available. In fact, if the Plex Server is restarted, it can “see” the T1000 in the transcoding hardware drop-down menu until the next reboot. At the OS level, it is always visible.

It has been working fine before, with the same driver version — then and now — which hasn’t changed. In any case, thank you for taking the time to check.

Regards.

@dvilches

Yes, The GPU always becomes visible.

What we found happening with this modified Nvidia driver is that it was matched to a specific DSM update release.

As soon as DSM updated again, it stopped working.

This is why it’s up to the driver maintainer to ensure it’s compatible with all appropriate DSM releases. Official Nvidia releases maintain their backward compatibility unless so stated in the release notes.
