Issues Finding External Harddrive after MacOS Sonoma Update

Recently updated to MacOS Sonoma, and my external harddrive is no longer found in the Plex library extensions. I can see that my external is there, but when I click on it it won’t open the subdirectories to go to my TV Show folder or 4K movie folder. I assume there are permissions involved but I am such a novice at this, that I would need a bit of hand holding to explain what to do. It’s never been a problem until recently so I assume it’s a macOS version thing. By my local HDD is seen just fine and I can still see my videos there. The extensions on the library are the same, but when I add a folder to a library and click on the External HDD folder, it doesn’t open in there. And anytime I click a show or movie, it says “Playback Error: Please Check Permissions for this File”

Any suggestions for re-enabling the permissions for an external?

Its a macOS permissons thing, you need to give the Plex app access to usb drives.

As dbirch has mentioned.

System setting/ Privacy & Security/ Files and Folder/Plex Media Server/ Removable Volumes… Allow.

I found that prior and made sure that was open. I also clicked on HDD and made that shareable. The DV External won’t open and show subdirectories. It’s odd. However my HOME screen still shows all the files, but clicking on them gives me permission issues.

Question, are you logged into admin?

What do you get to see on the right side of the Add Folder pane if you scroll to the top of it (once you selected DV Xternal on the left side)?

What do you see if you scroll that Add Folder modal all the way to the top, after selecting “DV Xternal?” It appears to be scrolled down, potentially past the point where its sub-folders would be visible. I’ve had it happen more than once that I was adding folders to a library and the media folders were scrolled off the top.

Oops, looks like @tom80H beat me by a few seconds! Truly a ninja.

All I see is BACK option. No sub folders. No thing is discoverable in the menu. It’s blank.

And yes I am the only person on this and I am the ADMIN.

Actually going straight to External gives me nothing to see. But if I go through Main M1 Mac HD and then Volumes Directory it shows the BACK option.

I’m not sure but what format is that drive?

Has there been a Server restart?

Try a different USB port.

Is this Drive plugged into a USB Hub?

MacOs Extended is the format.

One strange thing is the hard drive seems to be spinning a ton without any direct input. Not sure if this is a new OS issue or direct hardware issue. But it will be active way more than normal. Is this a Plex handshake issue? Maybe? But it’s a Western Digital on the same USB port as before. Switching ports did nothing. It only has two USB 3.0 ports.

It’s just the darnedest thing that this issue occurs. I don’t really have another option besides manually moving stuff every day. Might have to delete DVR and assess it on my main HD. But I hope to figure out this permission issue before too long.

I would toggle it on and off Permission and shut down the computer with USB unplugged. Unplug the power cord for a couple minutes, restart and then connect your USB devices.

Tried a few times. Still nothing.

Used another backup hard drive that is partitioned for my work pc (windows) and for backup storage for Mac (Extended Journal). The files in the work pc are viewable in libraries but the Mac side backup is not. Tried a thumb drive that is probably ExFAT, works are library. SO far it’s just the Green Iconed (Time Machine) hard drives that are hitting a blank wall.

I am pretty sure you need to be APFS with Time machine. As for Plex Content storage use ExFat

It took a while but I simply moved the data over to temporary hard drives and reformatted the main external to APFS format. That allowed the drive to be seen and it works with Plex. Moral of the story is currently the Mac Extended Journal format does not work with Plex.
