Issues playing content with dts-hd ma audio

i am seeing some weird behavior using the latest plex for mac client. i have an m1 mini connected to an onkyo tr-696 which is connected to the tv. all connections are hdmi. server is an m1 mac mini running the universal pms app.

when i try to play content that has audio in dts-hd ma the content will look as if its starting to play but then i just get a black screen. moving the mouse shows the plex controls and the time shows its stuck at 00:00. the receiver seems to try to change to the correct codec but gets stuck on stereo so there is no audio and no picture. this happens when i have dts (as well as all the other codecs )
pass through enabled.

when i check in tautulli it shows the content is streaming correctly (everything is direct play) and the timer is going. if i manually click anywhere in the time scrubber the content starts playing from that point and the receiver switches to 5.1 audio. the only thing is that instead of switching to dts audio it stays on pcm. at that point though the content plays and i get audio but that same behavior presents itself when i select the content from the main plex navigation window.

any other content is fine and the receiver switched to dts or dolby digital or whatever codec it is just the content with dts-hd ma which has this issue. if i set the audio device to auto then everything plays normally albeit with no dts pass through

Most of Apple’s computers don’t allow passthrough of HD audio codecs (limited by the OS). I don’t know if this has changed since I last checked but I see no reason why Apple should make the change (since they don’t sell any content with DTS-HD nor TrueHD). I expect that this is what you are running into. This is one of the reasons why I’ve recommended for years that people don’t use a Mac as an HTPC.
