Issues with 1) loss of deleted files 2) automatic library scanning

Server Version#: 1.41.3.9314-72009314
Player Version#: NA - current version for Nvidia Shield Pro and Plex for Windows Version 1.107.2.300-7093f413
<If providing server logs please do NOT turn on verbose logging, only debug logging should be enabled>
NAS: Synology 920+ (19.9TB total, 6.3TB free)

  • 4x 9.1TB drives
  • Running Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR)
  • DSM 7.2.2-72806 Update 2 (waiting for Update 3)

Issue 1:
I have never been able to recover deleted media files from the Synology NAS (files deleted via the players or web interface). The deleted files disappear completely from the NAS without appearing in any recycle bins on the NAS. I raised this issue with Synology support, and they advised me to contact Plex. Any suggestions on what might be causing this?
I’ve checked the settings and confirmed that “Empty trash automatically after every scan” is enabled.

Issue 2:
Until the most recent update, my libraries would automatically update when media was added or removed (via the windows explorer interface to the NAS), reflecting changes in the library. However, now no updates occur (unless media is deleted via the players).
I’ve checked the settings and confirmed that:

  • “Scan my library automatically” is enabled.
  • “Run a partial scan when changes are detected” is also enabled.

Any ideas on what might be causing this issue?

That is what deleting does. It doesn’t move it to recycle bin. it deletes the files and removes the DB entry for it.

“empty trash” is for when there are orphaned database entries because the server cannot find the file (which will say “unavailable” on the details screen. or info screen if multiple versions, or a trash icon on poster). hitting empty trash ( or letting it empty after a scan per the settings) removes those DB entries.

if you just don’t want plex to see a file anymore you need to move it outside of the folder that is set up for library

I’m not sure about the detection on Synology. I’ll need to wait til the server devs are back (which will likely not be til Monday). Possibly @ChuckPa knows is there are any known issues with that.

I was just reading For DSM 7 - Grant permissions for “PlexMediaServer” Synology FAQ - Questions, Answers, and How-To's - #24 by ChuckPa
could it be because the NAS has no permissions set in Shared folders for “plexmediaserver”? for the volume that has the media in it .
I is able to see the media when doe a manual scan!

I thought that deleted media would go to the recycle bin, a little dangerous to have deleted files just removed by Plex!

when changes are detected requires plex to be able to see the file/folder date changes to know to kick off a scan. I’m not sure how it works specifically on Synology which is why I pinged that other person who is much more versed in Synology than me.

That is why there is an extra confirmation window that tells you it will be removed from filesystem. (the recycle bin is part of the file system)

If I may add here,

  1. If you have the Synology recycle bin enabled, deletions from FileStation will go to the Recycle Bin

  2. For all other Linux applications, which is the default, delete is a true, hard, immediate deletion.

@cleob8

In Linux, we use a Linux OS feature known as inotify.
The kernel (OS core) offers a service to applications. That service sends notifications when there are changes in any of the directories it’s been given to monitor.

On Synology, or any smaller NAS, the table (in memory) which keeps track of which folders to monitor can fill quickly.

We can address this by making it bigger (customize) to suit our needs.

Here is the Synology FAQ which tells you how to address the problem.

Please give it a read and let us know if it addresses your second issue.

Sonarr / Radarr moves to recycle bin on delete.
And that is why i delete things in those and not in Plex, in case of slippery finger

The Allow media deletion is a very dangerous setting. Plex is a media indexer/player tool. It is not designed to manage the underlying files. The only time I enable that setting is when I am planning to delete multiple shows/movies across multiple drives. Then when I am done I immediately disable it again.

I am carrying out the FAQ 16: procedure as suggested Monitored by plex
Here are my calculations for folder number
volume Folders
Video 4185
Music 13409
Home Video 485
Music Video 25

Total folders 18104

Add 32768
Total 50872
divide by 32768
Total 0.644126435
Round up to 1 1
Add 1 to the integer result 1
Total 2
multiply by 32768
Total 65536

I ran the script in the FAQ with 65536 as the new value.

Restated the NAS, for the DSM restart

I still does not respond to adding files to the watched folders/libraries in Plex!

Only finds files when running “scan library files” for the specific libraries or when running in the Libraries menu option “scan library files”

Further update the FAQ 16: Increase the number of folders Plex can monitor, is working.
I made a mistake in the task creation of selecting an “admin” as the user and not the “root” when running the task.
Thank you for the advice ChuckPa

However, there is another issue regarding scanning files -
When using the Nvidia client interface/app for Plex with the NAS being the Plex server
In the Nvidia client interface/app moving to the left of the libraries under Home, one of the options available (amongst others) is to “Scan Library Files”
When selecting it this would not appear to work, it flashes up on TV screen "scanning library ****** " but does not seem to do this action as no Media files get added?

Automatically detecting media does not work over the LAN.

CIFS / NFS would need to poll the network mount.

Depending on the size of your library and the frequency you add media,
setting up scheduled scanning w/ partial scan (only scan what’s changed) can work

Thank you, I have scheduled scans enabled and the partial scan are working, thanks to your help

I thought this would be the case or something similar
BUT
why have it as an option on the app if it does not work or it should respond with a reminder ie “only for a local server” should be stated, rather than pretending its working when it doesn’t!

One further comment/question
I cannot remove “Plex Media Server” app from my Nvidia Player machine!
I think several years ago I accidently installed or enabled it in the settings of Plex player app as a option and it installed - I mistook it for Plex Media Player or misunderstood that it was the server side of the app
I have never been able to remove the app from the Nvidia player - no matter what I do to destroy it

In the Nvidia app, it’s useful if you have the Nvidia PMS server installed.

It serves no other purpose.

Do you have the PMS server installed and enabled in the Shield?

It installed but not enabled, as I don’t use the Nvidia player as a server only a player .
The server is on the synology NAS.
A don’t/didn’t really want the Nvidia player polling as a server on the network.
Are you saying that there is some advantage having the server activated on the Nvidia player?
