Server Version#: 1.13.9.5439 however the issue has been present for some time with previous versions.
Ubuntu 18.04.1 and Ubuntu 16.04
Having issues with pausing and resuming content on: Apple TV, Amazon Fire Stick, and web player. Specifically if I pause something and come back to it later, I will get stuck with a spinning wheel forever and the playback will not begin. I have to back out of the item, try to play it again, it sometimes works, other times I have to continue doing this for some time before it will finally work. Additionally quite often when I do finally get it to resume, it resumes at a point quite beyond where I paused it, almost like it continued to play in the background while paused. I never have issues starting unplayed content, and this happens on both wired and wireless connections.
Edit - I don’t have a good handle on whether or not this happens only to media that is being transcoded, or is an issue with direct play items as well. I will try to take better care to notice going forward but the two times it happened today it was with items which were being transcoded.
When you say pause and resume, do you mean you hit pause, then walk away, come back to the same device and hit play? Or do you mean stop playing, exit the app, come back later, hit play and select to resume?
Pause and walk away, grab a drink, or have a quick conversation. I don’t exit the plex client - but often the device screensaver kicks in before I get back to it. When I press a button to exit the screensaver the still of the paused item is there in full screen just as I left it.
If I pause and then immediately hit play it usually works.
I don’t get it. If it’s already paused, you are hitting pause again? The clients you mentioned, Apple TV, Fire TV, and Web don’t have separate pause/play buttons, it’s the same button.
Do you have your server/hard drives set to go into sleep mode? If so, it could be that your server/drives are taking longer to wake up than Plex expects so it times out. Try turning off sleep mode and see if you experience the same thing.
I was just trying to convey that the issue only occurs if the item is left paused for a while. If it is only paused for a few seconds the issue doesn’t occur.
I don’t think it is the storage as this also happens if there are other active streams which would of course keep the array active. And when playing an item from the beginning, even if it’s first thing in the morning after hours of inactivity - it begins immediately. I did confirm that all power saving options are disabled as well some time ago.
Additionally I’ve had the same server/storage setup for around 3 years and this issue only started around 6 months ago.
I did try disabling the ssd cache on my nas but that yielded no improvement.
Ok great. If you can recreate the issue then provide me the logs from the client and PMS I can take a look to see what is going on. If you can use the Fire Stick, that would great as the logs from that are easier for me to look at.
I tried and couldn’t reproduce this. I paused playback on my Fire TV, left the room for 30 minutes, came back to see the screen saver, pressed the center OK button to turn that off, then pressed the play/pause button and it resumed exactly from where it left on.
@anon18523487 thanks for the offer. I think I’ve got it figured out. It seems to be an issue with NFS4. I modified fstab to use NFS3 and haven’t had the issue since.
