Issues with track number and order (not a Plex noob)

I’ve used Plex for years without issue but lately everything that I’m adding has messed up track listings. I’ve tried to Refresh Meta Data, Analyze, and Fix Match; to no avail. The file names are clean, the ID Tags are correct, and I’m at a loss as to what is wrong. Any ideas?

Unmatch the album, then refresh metadata again.
Any change?

What is selected as Agent for this library in the properties, on the Advanced tab?

Is there a checkbox “Prefer local metadata” and what is its status?

What has been added to the library?
Only D: or D:\E?

Unmatch the album, then refresh metadata again.
Any change?
–No change.

I’m not sure I follow your next question but will try to respond.
In Settings>Agent (Legacy) I select Album and there are 3 options Personal Media Albums, Last.fm, and Plex Personal Media.
Under Personal Media Albums there are checks next to the only two options- Personal Media Albums and Local Media Assets (Albums); under Last.fm there are four options Local Media Assets (Albums), Last.fm, LyricFind, and Fanart.tv; the first 3 have checks, Fanart.tv does not; under Plex Personal Media there is nothing at all listed.
I do not see a “Prefer local metadata” option

The library is only "D:" which is an external hd. E is a folder inside of the external which contains all of the actual files.

Let me know if that all makes sense, I can post screenshots if that would be helpful.

This section is only relevant to legacy agents, as its name implies.

To determine the agent which is set for a library, edit the library.

I recommend you to create a folder structure, like this: https://support.plex.tv/articles/200265296-adding-music-media-from-folders/

Got it. The Agent is Plex Music. There is a Prefer local metadata option, the box is not checked.

That means your version of the album is not what Plex recognized, or is not what is up on Musicbrainz.org
If you want Plex to follow your embedded meta tags much closer, you need to tick that check box.
But that means that all your files need complete and correct tags.

The alternative is to look up your music on Musicbrainz and help Plex identifying it by embeddding the Musicbrainz ID as meta tag.
Musicbrainz Picard can do that for you. [HowTo] Music Organizing with MusicBrainz Picard

Got it. I was waiting to hear from you before checking that box as I have 8k+ albums and only a dozen or two that are being affected by this, I don’t want to “overcorrect”, if that makes sense.
I’ll give Picard a shot and let you know how it works out. Thank you very much for your detailed responses and educating me on this.

The Musicbrainz/Picard solution is working perfectly, that little tutorial is great.
Thanks again!!

Hey, so this was working great but just… stopped.
After I click “Lookup” it stalls and I get what you see in the attached screenshot. Any idea what’s up?

Picard is having problems right now because their source of album art is currently offline. If you look at their homepage here: https://musicbrainz.org. you can see an alert banner at the top mentioning it.

If you go into your Picard settings for Cover Art and turn off the two “Cover Art Archive” options for release and release group, the matching will be successful again until they restore their service.
